We went to a really great session at Britdoc on using Archive material in your docs. Have you tried using any in the past or would like to do it in the future? How easy or hard have you found it?
i'd like to use archive footage but can't afford it. i'm just finishing a film on the iraq war which i'll upload on the 4 docs site this week. its crying out for war footage but i just dont have the money to buy any.
Have you tried Archive.org ? Just about everything on there is free because it's in the public domain, so if you're able to spend a bit of time searching and are flexible with what you're looking for, you;ll almost certainly find what you want to download. It's a really cool thing. All the archive in our newAccessibility guide came from there and cost us nowt. Otherwise, it's worth bartering with archives, and trying to arrange a future profit-share kind of thing (if there'll be profits!)
archive.org is simply brilliant - and free! It's easily possible to spend hours just roaming through the wealth of free material there. A few free choice snippets appropriately placed in your own doc works wonders!
