Yeh i agree; I don't think he's imaginary. I think that he once existed. And when Newt feels lonely (i.e with Charlie coming out of hospital) he turns to Eli. Then he brings out the worst in Newt.
I am watching the omnibus and I am now almost certain that he isn't real!
When they took stephs portfolio or whatever,and Newt was like to him : We shouldn't have done that And Eli said something along the lines of: I didn't to anything,it was all you
I think Newt might be schizophrenic - it was mentioned that Newt met Eli after he discovered a corpse when he was a child. Then he found Sean's body and Eli appeared again. It seems to me that Eli is some kind of psychological coping mechanism that Newt manifests in times of severe emotional stress.
