Hi Ric, Out of my weird mind I started writing a silent comedy probably a half hour one off, I have never done anything like this before there was no planning it just happened it's about a diy disaster, are there any major differances for a mainly silent thing?

Hi Ric,

Most 4Laughers concentrate on TV based sketches, us JunkMales included.

In your opinion, is it better to go the audio (I'm thinking Radio 4/BBC 7) route to gain experience and become established?

Thanks

MC

Ric,

Whilst never getting to the bottom of the whole bee\rook thing.

What single piece of new comedy has got you most excited recently? And Davina and Fay too if you can nudge him off for a moment? (did that sound a bit rude?)

There is not really a set answqer to nthis. There is more radio and budgets are lower so there are often more ways in; but the profile of web outlets now is also great.

Writing for radio is a specific skill, different from television and is not just a training ground.

But on the other hand... it is

I would look at what you do best, where there are openings, adapt and keep trying.

Thanks

MC

Afternoon all !
Ric do you think people out there are interested in ideas for individual sketches as contributions to existing shows/as an example of talent or is there only real interest in the complete package ie. an entire sketch show or finished sitcom? I've seen the odd advertisement for contributions over the years but it doesn't seem common. Just not sure if approaching with a couple of sketches however pant bustingly orgasmic would be sufficient to provoke a real interest.

We did have one great silent comedy sitcom that nearly got through. I would just think even more clearly than usual about which talent you would use and where it would go in the schedule as your writing would have to be more precise; but could be brilliant

Well, looking back over the last year, JunkMales have had most success in the audio arena.

What other outlets apart from the BBC are there for Radio sketch work?

I loved AllynLawson's "Off the Coast of Cornwall", Lee35's "Roger McLouse", The pros from Dover and karl Pilkington Satisfied Fool.

I love Not Going Out - top gags, two comedians doing what they do best and a high hit rate. V funny. Loved series 2 of the IT Crowd and thought Gavin & Stacey was superb

If its asked for, if not then this is the best forum for individual sketches. I think sending a series around the same character or situation shows you can develop a one-off idea and it is about showing potential. Sorry can't be more helpful on this.

This is where you need to do your own research. Get the Radio Times, go through Internet listings and see who is making what, broadcasting what you like etc.

Good luck with it. I think there has been some really good audio stuff on 4Laughs. See what Channel 4 Radio are commissioning.

This question got lost in the talk of bees and Haribo's last week (I think). So I'm resubmitting it...

JunkMales currently work mainly in sketch form, but don't know how best to submit these? Are you interested in sketchs? Should they be submitted as a show in itself? Should they be themed?

Or for you it sitcoms or one off dramas all the way?

Just makes it even tougher and more competitive. Hopefully mean more good comedy is made but will make it even more important for out of london production companies to get commissions quickly.

It will take time to see how this affects us all and which specific strands are cut.

Also means that I may well be available for weddings and barmitzvahs in the new year

Danny has a writers handbook which also lists production companies that he's been using for us to find targets.

Thanks Ric - we'll come back and see you after series 2 or 3 of our radio show has aired then :-)

I may have read this wrongly but I don't think this is the right forum to pitch to Baby Cow. If I have misunderstood the question apologies and try it again a different way.

It was a kind of royal 'you' as in the business... it was more asking about your perception and experience of 'cold calling' with sketch submissions.
