How does Peggy get herself in so much financial difficulty? Peggy
Do you know, it was a shock to me because I'd forgotten that Peggy had spent money that she didn’t really have. Far more than she should have done! When I got the storyline I was shocked, but when I thought about it I realised she has been spending quite a lot. So why did she not ask for any sort of help?
Well she couldn't tell the girls (Ronnie and Roxy) because they are new in her life, and at the time Phil had gone back to his alcoholic ways. Moreover, even when Peggy felt she should go and tell him, she knew she couldn't, because it could send him right back there. She was too scared. She is a bit proud and it gets on top of her. How much are we talking? Peggy and Marco
It's £40,000 but I suppose she went on the cruise, had the Vic done up. She lends money, she gives money away... she's very generous! What about the wedding?
That was the thing that really got her. She wanted to do it, she insisted on doing it. I was shocked though when I got the script. I thought, is it really that much?! But they do work it all out. What's Peggy’s reaction when the bailiffs call round?
Well, she lies. When they arrive she pretends she’s the cleaner. They go away, and then they come back. She thinks it's going to be all right, but if only she could have been honest in the first place and gone to Ronnie and Roxy. She thinks that she can get out of the trouble herself but she can't.
Is Peggy scared?
She's quite a flash woman and she's not scared of the bailiffs. They're a bit edgy and dangerous - it wouldn't be EastEnders if they weren't! She's more scared of Phil finding out and losing the pub...
We'll have more from Barbara as the story develops and Peggy takes increasingly desperate measures to hang on to the Vic.
