Coronation Street bosses have axed seven characters from the soap.

The Morton clan - Kebab shop boss Jerry (Michael Starke) and children Mel (Emma Edmonson), Darryl (Johnny Dixon), Kayleigh (Jessica Bardon) and Finlay (Ramone Quinn) - will leave later this year after joining the cast last March.

Jack Ellis and Matthew Compton, who have played father and son bookies Harry and Dan Mason since December, will also bow out in the autumn.

A source told The Sun: “The producers had a big forward planning meeting this week and have decided to axe a number of characters. Most of the actors were called in at lunchtime and told - they are gutted.”

Ian Reddington, who plays Liz McDonald’s new husband Vernon Tomlin, will also make his exit in September.

Show boss Kim Crowther said: “Coronation Street has always had a tradition of characters who come in to play out storylines beside established characters before moving on.

“As in any community there are people who live there for years and people who pass through. We still have some interesting storylines to play with these characters. They are all very talented actors and we wish them well.”

Reports that Crowther was was looking to axe five long-serving cast members were recently denied.

Gosh I did not expect any of these characters to go they havent given any of them a chance they have only been in the show two minutes ,I am very disappointed to be honest thank you Pink for that info

I know thats what i'm saying he's capable of more

None of the characters being axed are big characters anyway. Not one of them has really had a major storyline, not to mention the fact that the ones being axed have not even been in it that long. Why get these characters in if they are going to have no storylines and then be axed? Pointless! However, I shant miss any of them for that exact reason!

can't say i'll mis any of the morton clan..jery was ok at a push, but darryl is the most annoying little brat on the street!!! don't think its fair to have brought the bookies in when they obviously hadn't thought of any storylines to give them! they never really had a chance.

wonder if there will be a big love triangle with harry, liz and vernon??!! maybe thats why both the men leave?

Michael Starke will always be remembered for one character and that is Sinbad in Brookie which he played very well.

lol, I'm not bothered by any of these characters leaving. Though I could swear I read that the Bookies wernt leaving.

He was also the odd job man in "The Royal" the 1960s hospital drama on Sunday nights.

I like the dad bookie.

i thought the bookies were getting storylines as well there was meant to be an affair with liz

I like the two bookies hope they are staying and they get some good storylines

they have to replace the actors who left with a few hotties i thnk,,,,the onyl good looking guy on the street is liam!!

I can quite honestly say I am not going to miss ANY of those characters, particularly the kebab shop lot, they have been a nuisance ever since they joined. I thought half of them had disappeared already as you hardly see the younger kids.
