Bush gets serious about smut
By Colin Mahan - TV.com

Bush signs smut law.

You might notice less digitized nudity on reality shows soon.

Today, President Bush signed into law a new bill that boosts the fines levied against TV stations for indecency from $32,500 to $325,000. The law, called the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act, was lobbied heavily for by conservatives who see TV networks as symbolic of a moral decline in America.

In remarks at the signing, Bush said the fines shot up so dramatically because "Congress got serious."

"Every day our nation's parents strive to raise their children in a culture that too often produces coarse, vulgar, and obscene entertainment. Parents are the first line of defense, but broadcasters and the electronics industry must play a valuable role in protecting our children from obscene and indecent programming," Bush said. "Unfortunately, in recent years, broadcast programming has too often pushed the bounds of decency."

Steam began gathering for a change in the indecency penalties when Janet Jackson bared her infamous breast at the 2004 Super Bowl. Then, last year, CBS ran a controversial episode of crime drama Without a Trace that featured a scene of a teen orgy.

Various other shows, like cable channel VH1's reality train-wreck Surreal Life, had also been singled out for fines. However, FCC chairman Kevin Martin and Republican lawmakers felt the penalty wasn't high enough to act as a deterrent.

CBS affiliates are in the midst of appealing the fines they received for Trace, which totaled $3.3 million.

i wonder if this could be introduced into britain?

Channel 4 has bagged the rights to two new dramas and two new comedies launching next season in the US.

The pickup includes Ron Rifkin family drama Brothers & Sisters (more info) and Betty The Ugly (more info), a one hour comedy featuring Extras star Ashley Jensen. Both come from BVITV.

C4 has also acquired new Warner Bros. drama Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (more info), from West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin and starring Friends alumnus Matt Perry, as well as comedy The Class (more info), which comes from David Crane (Friends).

"We are delighted to have secured the rights to these much sought after series that confirm C4's commitment to the best of US drama and comedy," said Jeff Ford, director of acquisitions at C4.

According to early reports, The Class has been earmarked for Friday nights on C4, with a supporting slot on E4. Betty The Ugly will air as part of T4 at weekends, as well as E4.

Meanwhile, the two dramas are likely to air in a 10pm slot on C4, with the next episodes following straight after on More4.

Of course you can blame the parents.

Ensure that children don`t have a TV in their room until they are older. Mine didn`t have a bedroom TV until they were 15.

Depending upon the age of the children involved, Bala, but children under 12 are not supposed to be "home alone". So somoen has to be looking after a primary school child after school.

And for parents who work eveings, there will be a babysitter who should be preventing younger children from watching inappropriate programming.

Daytime terrestrial TV does not show inappropraite shows. And Sky Digital has parental control settings to prevent children from accessing age restricted shows/films.

brothers And Sisters and Studio 60 are appropriate acquisaitions for Ch4, given that the former is reminiscent of Six Feet Under and desperate Housewives and the latter comes from the creator of The West Wing and will probably have the same kind of writing even if the tone and prtemise is/will be different.

Channel 4 has picked up another two new dramas from the US, the broadcaster has confirmed.

The acquisitions - both from Sony Pictures - include Kidnapped, starring Jeremy Sisto (Six Feet Under) as a hostage negotiator trying to solve the abduction of a wealthy couple's teenage son. The series will air on NBC at 10pm Wednesdays.

The other pickup is Runaway, a Prison Break-style drama with Donnie Wahlberg (Boomtown) as a wrongly convicted man who escapes from jail and tries to prove his innocence.

Both shows will air on Channel 4 and E4 in 2007 and add to the broadcaster's previously announced comedy and drama pickups.

Fox has set the premiere dates for its new and returning shows this Fall.

First off the block will be the second season premiere of Prison Break on Monday, August 21. New hostage drama Vanished will also begin the same night.

Bones follows on Wednesday, August 30 alongside the series premiere of Justice while Simon Cowell's Duets begins with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, August 31.

House has its third season premiere on Tuesday, September 5 after the series premiere of new thriller Standoff.

New Thursday comedies 'Til Death and Happy Hour debut on September 7, a day ahead of the new season of Nanny 911.

Fox's Sunday lineup - The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy and The War At Home - returns with new instalments on September 10.

Baseball coverage is keeping back the launch of several series. The fourth season of The O.C. will begin on Thursday, November 2 and new episodes of King of the Hill are being saved for midseason.

As usual, both 24 and American Idol will premiere in January.

Five has won the rights to two of the most anticipated dramas from the upcoming season in the US.

The first is legal drama Shark, starring James Woods as a top celebrity defence lawyer who decides to switch sides and become a prosecutor. The series is being handed the prestigious post-CSI slot on CBS from September.

Meanwhile, Five beat off Channel 4 to the rights for Vanished, about the search for a senator's missing wife. On the cast are John Allen Nelson (24) and Rebecca Gayheart (Nip/Tuck).

"I am delighted to have secured the rights to both these highly sought-after series and believe they are a fabulous addition to Five's raft of already successful acquired dramas," said Vanessa Brookman, Five's new controller of acquisitions.

Five has the free television and digital terrestrial rights to both shows, while UKTV has picked up the basic pay rights to Shark.
