I wouldn't have laughed - being woken from my slumber. It was pathetically juvenille from a pair of adults

Why are they allowed to be sold?
To allow black people to use that word all the time without censure, but crucify a white person for using it is itself racist.
Explain THAT Channel 4, if you please.
Since Channel 4 aren't an authority with the power to grant rap musicians permission to use particular language or to control song distribution, I'm not sure what you're asking them to explain?! They're about as culpable for rap vernacular as you are for my choice of toothpaste (ie not at all!) And it's about context and who's saying what, and how. No pun intended, but it really isn't as black and white as "if a black person can say it everyone should be allowed to".

Can someone please start a campaign to make Shabnam return Maquita Oliver's voice?

If use of the word is racist, and illegal to use. And causes the person who uses it instant dismissal. Why then are music disks that contain that word legally allowed to be sold? Why then do record companies allow that word to be recorded when making the music disks? If black people are allowed to use the word towards other black people without censorship, why then is it illegal for a white person to use the same word? So, if there is one law for the people of one colour, and another law for people of another colour, is that not, by definition, racist? You cannot have certain words that are acceptable for use by some people, and have the same words unnacceptable for use by other people. It either needs to be banned outright, or allowed all the way across the board.

Sorry, Angelus, but if you're to have any hope of understanding this issue you are going to have to take a leap of faith and give up this absolutist either/or rigidity. Words are just sounds- it matters tremendously how they are siad, by whom, to whom and in what context. The word "******" is not illegal. No words are illegal in the UK. Racially discriminatory, inflamatory or insulting language/behaviour, however, can constitute a criminal offence in certain contexts (as well as being rightly condemned by civilised people). In certain sections of the "black community" the word "******" is used as a familiar term amongst black people. This is understood and accepted within the social conventions of that group. It is not used as a racial insult, but as a label of shared identity. In this context it is clearly not a racist term. For a white person to describe a black person as a "******", even if they are a part of a shared "urban" social group is treading on very different ground, for the very simple reason that white people spent generations treating black people as inferiors on the grounds of their colour. The context of a white-to-black use of the N word therefore comes with a weight of racist history. I hope this helps you to think about this issue more realistically; you simply cannot treat every use of the word as equal, because they aren't.

never heard of her, and i'm kind of glad...anyway, carole's the old campaigner, if anyone can start one of she can, although the way she walks away from the slightest argument i can't see where her campaigning skills lie. **************************** Beware of the Loons!!!FAF #40

Maquita Oliver used to present Popworld with Simon Amstell and now does T4. Shabnam has her exact tone and inflections.
(PS For the record, the "******" editing in my post above is by C4)

I know there were only four of them nominating, but I'm staggered no one wanted to put Charley up for eviction. Every time I see her she seems a little more ghastly and manipulative.
Still, at least Shabs is in the firing line.
Seani has grown on me and I'm becoming quite taken with Gerry. Nicky threatened to lose my support by joining forces with Charley and Shabnam, but she's just about maintaining a degree of intelligent behaviour.
Sorry to see Ziggy letting some borderline homophobic tendencies show...
Has it really only been a couple of weeks?!

i still can't bear seany. his grumbles about shabnabs inconsiderate behaviour while others are trying to sleep pot? kettle? black? he talks out of his bumhole, and the convenience of only realising he's gay when he's decides to apply for BB....hmmm... jerry's sweet though, when he woke up with a start and grabbed the teddy, aaaaah re. charley, i can't believe she's less offensive to 'pinky and the brain' than carole, what's going on there??? **************************** Beware of the Loons!!!FAF #40

I didn't realise Seany only came out for the show. To be honest I was surprised when he said he was gay, but then I have notoriously bad gaydar despite them being "my people"...! Gerry just seems lovelier and lovelier...

Like the Roman Empire – it has to come to an end eventually. Surely it is time to move away from the cult of celebrity for celebrity sake? Where are the future playwrights, actors, film directors going to come from, as it is this cheap, instant television that is undermining the genuine business of entertainment.
It is OK to admit to being intrigued by Big Brother – there must be something in us all that enjoys being a ‘Peeping Tom’. You can watch things simply because you hate them… But, maybe somebody in television’s hierarchy should intervene and feel the quality of programming and not the width. Crack Cocaine is addictive – but it doesn’t make it acceptable to sell it…
Maybe I am wrong – but, the celebrity status of Big Brother contestants appears to have progressively declined. We have the odd ‘blip’, such as Jade G. and I am happy that she has made substantive money from her notoriety. But, pleasssssseeee make her go away now, as feting her is simply wrong. We all know this… She is the worst conceivable role-model – so we are watching her as a type of ridicule.
The Big Brother format was inventive – but, like the Biro, it is now two-a-penny, and time to move on…

I don't see BB as a threat to writers/actors/directors etc. They'll continue to come from the same place they always did; training and working their way into the industry, some getting recognised, some getting lucky. If I gave a stuff about them, the people I'd be worried about would be models and WAGs, as they seem to represent the pinnacle of achievement for the female housemates. As for biros, they are still my preferred writing impliment. The humble Bic is a classic I simply couldn't do without!
