Unfortunately, there will always be idiots who think harming animals is a 'fun' way to pass the time of day, and incidents like the one on Derren Brown's show isn't going to make a difference one way or the other.
I agree, there's no intrinsic value in seeing an animal in distress, whether that distress is real or simulated, but like other posters on this thread have suggested, it's best to see what Brown actually does on the show before making judgement.
I was disgusted to see the trailer for this. Thankfully we have welfare laws in this country for when animals are involved in television shows and films, but what we don't have is a nation of civilised and sober people who are well versed in the difference between psychological experiments and pranking around.
It's not a case of whether or not those who don't agree with it watch it, but more a case of this kind of thing planting ideas in impressionable and / or idiotic people's minds.
I think Channel 4 should pull this part of the programme.

The impressionable and the idiotic don't need this kind of programme to put such ideas in their heads - they're going to torture and kill animals regardless of what they see on TV. It'll be interesting to watch the show and see what all the fuss is about.
more dissapointing realy; Hes been great entertainment up until now. (i serioulsy doubt anyone/thing would ever come even close to being 'hurt' in the litation world we sadly live in now)
But Re some other points; This series does seem to be a re-hash of lots of previously seen (on derren brown) and well known/demostrated illusuions elsewhere; what happened to the original, and intuative illusionist we all loved to watch?
