I have recently been watching the repeats of St Elsewhere being shown in the early hours of the morning (I record it and watch it later). However one thing that i find unbelievable is that it was censored. Many episodes feature a number of cuts including language and edits to scenes. At 4.30 in the morning, honestly it's disgusting. Censorship of sitcom 'friends' is also unbelieveable. It's not as if the language could have just been blanked out but the scenes have been edited very badly.

Cant have bad language on C4.

Just in case the parents record the progs shown after the watershed to let their kids watch later. Nod Nod

And yes, that is one of the excuses I have been given BY Channel 4 themselves when I phoned them and queried certain censorship cuts in a programme shown after the watershed.

John Smith: So what am I then? Nothing. I`m just a story.

Doctor: You`re an echo. That`s all. A TimeLord is so much more. A sum of knowledge; a code. A shared history. A shared suffering. Only it`s gone now, all of it. Gone forever.

Sadly, C4 is a shadow of its former self – long gone are the days of pushing boundaries, providing alternative & challenging programming etc. As they have turned increasingly into ITV (mainstream, ‘dumbed down’, wall to wall ‘reality’ TV etc.), they have become enthusiastically pro-censorship.

It’s not all their fault, however; the broadcast censor, ‘Ofcon’ (not a typo), must share the blame – It is they, after all, who upheld a few complaints against the BBC for broadcasting “Pulp Fiction” too soon AFTER the watershed! Or for broadcasting an uncensored episode of that most adult of programmes, “Monk”, pre-watershed. Or Sky Three for daring to broadcast another adults’ only programme, “Futuramma”, uncensored, at 20.00! I could go on

Of course, if you complain to ‘Ofcon’ about censorship, they will say it is up to the broadcaster to decide which version of something to show, so long as they comply with their ‘broadcast (in reality, censorship) code’.

Still, if more people would complain, both to the broadcasters & ‘Ofcon’, they might, eventually, get the message! The again, pigs might fly…
