I actually loved this episode. Lazily you could say it was a redux of The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit but it felt like so much more to me.
The Doctor - I almost thought this week with that excessive streaming through his body that he could be on the verge of regeneration after all. David was fine in chanelling a possessed Doctor and he rightly placed the blame on McDonnell but his closeness to Martha now will echo Rose's if they don't rewrite certain dialogue.
Martha - Yeah again I liked and while the Rose style dialogue annoyed, her take charge action in trying to save the Doctor more than made up for it. Her flirting with Riley? Didn't bother me! Problems with Francine? Somewhat interesting and taking it out on McDonnell? Great as far as I was concerned! The moment between Martha and The Doctor as she was blasted off with Riley had that chilling effective silence which dramatically worked.
Francine/Saxon's people - Maybe it's the actress but I still can't warm to Martha's mother and a part isn't neccessarily willing to want to either if I'm being frank. I get her concerns for her daughter but the way she conveys them and the fact that she's working with Saxon's henchmen does her no favours. Is Saxon The Master or not? He certainly has the trappings of it and he is definitely setting The Doctor up for a fall too.
McDonnell/Corwin - The husband and wife team essentially from hell when you think about it. McDonnell was played to a well able Michelle Collins but still the silly bint was responsible for all the ship's problems. Korwin screaming "burn with me" was still effective even if it was blasted out excessively towards the end.
Scannell/Riley - I want to write slash about these two but I'll refrain because out of everyone from this ship, they were the most vocalised and interesting of the bunch really. Scannel got some good moments with The Doctor but overall it was Riley's scenes with Martha that made parts of the episode for me. Go Martha for snogging him.
Abby/Erina/Ashton - Standard non-vocalised red shirts who were there as a body count and little else, though Erina's "kill me now" spiel was hilarious before her wish got oh so granted.
Loved it a lot but looking more forward to next week's instalment so a 9/10.
McDonnell: “That is brilliant”
The Doctor: “I know”.
Francine: “What’s this, a pub quiz?”
Martha: “Yeah, pub quiz”
Francine: “Using your phone is cheating”.
Martha: “You don’t know The Doctor, I believe in him”
Riley: “Then you’re lucky to have someone to believe in”.
Scannell (re TARDIS): “This is never your ship”
The Doctor: “Compact and another word – robust”.
The Doctor: “Thank you”
Martha: “Don’t mention it”
