In the hatch, I mean. I must say, although the light, sound, and magnetics show wasn't half good, I'm still not won over. I think if Desmond hadn't done the key, it would have stopped, eventually.

Henry didn't seem to think it was important whether or not it was pressed - rather, he thought it was important that Locke and co made the decision for themselves. So, I'm still thinking, some sort of test.
Yeah, and did anyone else think that Henry's behaviour, after Desmond activated the failsafe and there was all that noise and light, it was like Henry was thinking, "Hmmm, so-and-so has stopped entering the numbers?"
And. if so, does that mean they failed the test, or passed it?
Personally, I think whatever is in the Swan definitely does something if the numbers aren't enetered, but Henry doesn't necessarily give a sh1t about it!
I thought it could be a "Why has that happened again?" thing

I wouldn't believe what Kelvin said about 'everything going away'. He was drunk when he told Des this, and it can be assumed Radzinski either told Kelvin the same thing drunk too, or Radzinski knew 'The Swan' was fake (or at least that is what Rad was told!!!).
Remember, this fail safe is something you use in an emergency - or in moments of drunken desperation.

There's also the first time Desmond asked what entering the numbers was all about, Kelvin said, "Just saving the World". Apart from the Orientation Film (the incident & the protocol), did we get any other info about the electromagnet?
It could be that Kelvin was just sarcastically exaggerating the importance of the job, and a failure to enter the numbers wouldn't result in the End Of The World. Maybe Henry Gale knew this, so didn't care if the numbers weren't entered.
For example (whited out Numbers spoiler!) The DHARMA initiative were supposed to keep transmitting the numbers until they figured out how to change the result of the Valenzetti Equation. If the numbers weren't transmitted, the Hanso lot would think DHARMA had succeeded, leading them to stop trying to save mankind (thinking the job had already been done).
'The Incident' could even be Rousseau changing the numbers transmission to a distress call. For some reason, DHARMA had to resort to sending the numbers from inside the Swan, by some crazy, method such as seismic vibrations(!), with equipment that is in constant danger of blowing itself up.
And the people sealed up inside the Swan haven't realised, or were never told, that DHARMA gave up and went home years ago.
good point Kitiara. i hadn't thought of that. i still cannot see the hatch as being that important despite everything, because if it was it woudln't be left up to a few plane survivors with serious mental problems, what with the visions and everything. will we see the devastation that the last lapse has caused seeing as the penultimate one supposedly caused the plane crash? the others don't seem concerned so neither am I. i want to join.

The Swan is not fake?
It does all go away when you turn the key, that's why it's called a SYSTEM TERMINATION.
Whatever they used to build up and store the EM energy is gone, they blew the dam.
i 've re-thought it. the hatch door blowing off, it immediatly preceeeds the white light and noise and everything so the hatch has to be gone - or at least its function.
A bit off topic but never mind: something that made me laugh....when Des decided he did want to enter the numbers and Locke threw the monitor on the floor...whats the problem? The monitor is just the visual aid. As long as the keyboard was still attached to the computer base, Des still could have entered the numbers and executed them if he was careful. Films do that a lot though. If someone wants to destroy evidence etc they always bust up the monitor (cos it makes nice sparks and imploding noises most likely) but haven't actually touched the data storage bit of the computer!!

I thought that the whole numbers thing perhaps was just phsycological but the whole light/sound thing makes me think again.
The whole DHARMA giving up and leaving explination is convincing, although they wouldhave alerted the person in the swan. Also, the suction tube thingy found in the oval lead to nowhere which then again makes me think that it's all a test! Therefore the light/sound thing is again a mystery, unless it was an effect programmed into the mainframe on the island that if the buttons arent entered ther's to be a big song and dance about it causing more confusion! But the bit that really gets me going is how it looks as if penelope is somehow behind it!!!!!!!
