I was rewatching Exodus part 2 to see if I could see any of the tailies in the airport or on the plane. I couldn't but I noticed a few more points.
One of them was when Sawyer and Mike were having a conversation about Walt. He said he'd have shown Walt the back of his hand as it would have been cheaper than him seeing a shrink.
This got me thinking back to my institute and phychology theroy and I wondered if Sawyer too has been to see a pshychiatrist. What better way to brainwash people than meeting a trained psychiatrist. If they can't control your life who can???

Sawyer has been through so much in his life, his parents murder (kinda) and then we don't know what happened to him between then.

Perhaps foster care, or relatives...however, I feel that he may not have been wanted, or happy where-ever he went. I mean, the comment about "shown him the back of my hand" makes me think that this may have happened to him as a child.

I think he could have seen a shrink, perhaps as a child as social services would enforce it on him. But now, as an adult, I'm not sure if I could see Sawyer waned to go to a shrink.

His desperation to find the real sawyer has led to him searching thw world (possibly) and conning many, how he would fit time in to see a shrink I don't know.

And also, we know what Sawyer's like, he barely listens to Jack, so do you really see him listening to a shrink?

As for brainwashing....it is possible that people could have brainwashed, like hypnotising type thing. But Sawyer...I don't think so!

I totally agree about the adult Sawyer but I just wondered if maybe he could have been sent as a child to help him come to terms with him watching and hearing his parents die. It must have been horrific so I can imagine that a proffesional would have been called to try and talk to him, or at least listen.
Also as a quick thought he doesn't say much about himself or talk in confidence so maybe this is why, it reminds him of a bad past???

Hmm that's a good point CR...

I don't think that Sawyer would have seen a shrink as an adult... he's being too resilient towards his past, but I'd imagine he would have done as a child. After both his parents died I would assume that he would have been taken into care of some sort [maybe not a loving home], and after something so traumatic he would almost certainly have been forced to see someone. However, he probably didn't like having to talk about things, maybe thinking that if he talked about them they would definately be real, and so closed himself off and now maybe doesn't want to talk, as it would take him back to his childhood and remind him of things he has tried to forget.

I don't think he has been brainwashed though... although I do like the idea of brainwashing by shrinks taking place... could put a whole new spin on Libby!

Yeah, he's got too much pride hasnt he. Although maybe when he was younger he saw one, like Beachy and lwl suggest. I think that is more likely maybe.

Maybe he scoffs out of a fear though, becasue he doesn't want to relive his nightmare. A bit like Hurley did when Kate asked him if the nimbers meant anything to him, even though she'd said 23 was relevant to her, he still sort of laughed it off "no they're just numbers".

Exactly CR....he isn't ready to confront his past. It brings up to much pain, and hurt and he's not ready to face that yet.

Perhaps part of him is afraid...that he will either be laughed at, or just afraid of the feelings who he had locked up inside for years.

I also think, as we know from him not burning the letter, that he is afraid of letting go. He is Sawyer now, not James Ford...and so by confronting his feelings he may have to let go of who he is, and he is no where near ready to do that.

Yet another one who can't let go of their past. Funnily enough I wouldn't have put Sawyer in the same ballpark as Jack and Locke hmmmm.
