Question:
It has come to my attention that much of Season 2 has been dull, unrewarding, tepid and rather stale. Kates flashback episode was very tv movie-esque, certainly in terms of both acting and writing. And don't get me started on the hour of my life I wasted watching "lovable fatty" Hurley decide wherever to give Charlie some peanut butter or not.

Now that the hatch has been revealed, everything has flatlined. There is no more build up, no more anticipation and no more climax. Nothing to reveal. Even the polar bear seems to have had enough and dissapeared.

So what do you think spoiler free people? Am I justified in what I say, or is Lost still the best thing since the Pet Shop Boys??

you decide

Choices:
"Yes, your right! Lost is a big pile of cack!!"
"Well, it has gone downhill a little since S1..."
"Lost is ok...it beats watching Newsnight"
"Lost is fantastic and the best thing ever on television!! "
"shut up discobiscuit you moaning twot!"

Rant Mode On!

I was thinking the same this morning. Before S2 was on C4, I was watching the daily show and Jack was on being interviewed, he said That the writers do have an averall plan but he hoped that they didn't drag out to long, it seems to me that is exactly what they are doing.

Enough of the flashbacks, I don't want one every god damn episode, flashbacks should only be used few and far between and when they have something important to say.

What I want to see is action, progress about what is actually going on! I dont want the only interesting bits of the episode to come in the last ten minutes.

Build ups to ad breaks and end of episodes is absolute crap, enough of the feely feely crap, get on with the story!!!

My god even Jack thinks they are dragging it out to much.

Rant Mode Off!

What are you gonna do...splash me!!???

I voted Lost is Fantastic...
I don't really think it's the best thing ever ever ever on tv - but it's the best thing on at the mo and if they cancelled it I'd have nothing to watch (now DH has finished).

I can see what you mean about last week's eppy being a bit "tv movie", but I think they're still doing okay. I thought in S1 most people liked the flashbacks and they were a strong reason for watching the show, so rubbishing them now seems a bit contradictory. The main problem with the S2 flashbacks is they are now just repetitive fill ins. Hopefully learning more about the tailies will remedy that (although bringing new characters in is an unimaginative way around "we've run out of ideas for these characters" situation, but necessary for the show).

The plot moved slowly last season too - slower than it's going now, I think. Remember it took most of the series just to get that hatch open. Yes, the peanut butter episode was a bit tedious, but remember we've also had the mysterious-scottish-hatch-guy episode, the Ana-punches-Sawyer-and-kills-Shannon episode and the tailies'-entire-s1-in-1-eppy episode.

I voted for the latter option. Razz

For me the fact that its is slow paced is what adds to the mystery of Lost, it drives you nuts waiting for the next big thing to happen and bam loads of stuff hits you at once. Even the slower eppys make you understand the charcters and their actions better and still adds to the plot in terms of thier existance. The flashbacks are important for the same reason. Dont forget, s1 was slow to begin with - cave in eppisode, but wasnt long before the pace increased and i feel that it will be the same this time around. We need the slow eppisodes otherwise lost would last like two seasons and we dont want that. Also the slow ones give us time to reflect where we are, if it was really fast all the time, wed get lost quickly and be like WTF? Lost has a drama slow or fast is still brilliant and complusive viewing.

Btw the post title reminded me of Bohemian Rhpasody - well at least what people said about it and its meaning, that the meanings pretty obvious with a load of nonsense in between. Think/hope that lost is more complicated than that.

hahahahahahahaha very funny. The title made me laugh alot.
Well i voted for the final option. Anything that sparks so much debate and keeps so many people guessing and talking about it has got to be good.

I think its moving along at a good pace.

Lost is fantastic..it's one of the best US exports ever imo. Lost works on so many levels and it has so many layers. It not only provokes discussion and debate but it demands it. It demands it because it has so much relevance. Whilst it is mystifying and baffling at times it presents itself in a manner which allows us, the viewer, to apply certains themes to real life..so many of the themes in Lost overlap into real life issues..from faith to science, from ethics to morals, from choice to state control.

Lost is so symbolic of so many things and it's many pieces allow us to not only build the 'bigger picture' but to see it..it allows us look at things in a different light..it gives us a platform to challenge our long-held perceptions and perspectives..

It does so in an entertaining way..a way which before Lost, I thought impossible for a sci-fi program to do.

For anyone to say Lost is rubbish they either dont understand it or simply dont appreciate it. That's not a slight against them because just like Lost encourages opinions, people are welcome to theirs when it comes to the value of the show. Lost doesnt hide or skirt away from issues..it presents them in a bold and modern way..it's open to critism and is a target for many people to slate it as 'shallow'. But they just dont get it..Lost is profound..something profound is often misunderstood and mislabelled.

I think that in a few years time, once Lost is over..we'll all appreaciate it that bit more. It's like most things really..when you look back and think.."wow..that was great..i onlt wish it could have lasted.."

I think thats a fairly harsh comment. To say people who don't like Lost don't understand it is a bit off track. I mean come on, it's not the most difficult show to follow is it! It is about as deep as your average tv drama with extra hidden bits thrown into the background for people to suss out if they can be bothered.

discuss please

Actually ALOT of people dont understand it..but tyou missed my point entirely disco-B

..i didnt say 'people who dont like Lost dont understand it' ..those were not my words. Smile

I said [and i quote:] "For anyone to say Lost is rubbish they either dont understand it or simply dont appreciate it."

Now, there's a BiG difference there Smile..for one thing, i said that people who say Lost is "Rubbish"..'either' dont "understand it" OR [and it's a mighty big OR Wink] dont "appreciate it".

So..[to clarify] they "either" dont 'understand' it [and many people dont for various reasons..they may not have got into it from the start etc etc] OR they may not 'appreciate' it ..and by appreciate, i mean: They dont like that sort of thing [eg sci-fi], they dont have tiime to watch it, they dont find it interesting, they dont value it, it doesnt connect with them etc etc

Now..surely this is a fair comment? It's not insulting anyone as i used the phrase: 'understand' OR 'appreciate'.

Smile

ah ok ,im too drunk to argue

Kor-Evo wins

I still think Lost is losing its edge. It annoys me as it was such a great first season. Season 2 has just annoyed me, grrrrr (apart from the first episode which was well sexy)

I want John Locke to find a boat and sail off and find a new island so we can have a new show called "LOCKE" that just concentrates on him.

It would be cool.

I disagree Roco - it's not the people who don't understand it that dislike it, it's the people that claim to understand it that dislike it.

I mean, do any of us really understand it? I sure don't - what the hell is the black smoke, what's the point of them being there, who are the others, what's the Dharma Initiative, how did the Black Rock get there, will we ever see the Security System in full, what's with the crossovers of characters? There's hundreds of unanswered questions and so I don't think any of us really know what is going on yet - as much as we speculate, we have only limited knowledge of the happenings and meanings of the island and until a time where more is revealed, we shall not understand it.

I think the people that don't like it are those who are just like - well it's just another Cult TV Show, and they wouldn't have survived a plane crash and it's stupid and nothing is ever revealed and I know exactly why it's happening - because it gets viewers. It's not about that at all - well, to an extent it is but not totally about that - but people who don't watch it avidly or have seen it but disliked it seem to be those who claim to understand what is going on. I don't have a clue as to what is going down on the island, and that's what makes it fascinating.

And it's much deeper than your average TV Drama; it's a Cult show, and Cult shows are not 'average TV Dramas'. Cult shows, to be Cult, require a certain level of depth so as to captiave two audiences; the ordinary viewer and the Cult viewer. The former require the program to be on a level which entails a certain element of tension, and enjoyable on such a level that does not give way to a 'Deeper Understanding.' The latter however require a different tension - whilst the former audience gain tension from single episodes or happenings, such as 'Will Jack survive in episode 2, S1' - the Cult audience desire a tension based upon an understanding of each element of the program. The perfect example of this is the X-Files where upon a huge number of people watched it as a 'One-Off' whereupon they watched it when nothing else was on. These people got great enjoyment from single episodes because they were understandable and fun to watch based soley on the events of that particular episode. However, the Cult audience gained a different enjoyment because each episode led them closer to the "Truth" and gave them not only more understanding of this "Truth" but also reasoning as to why the main character, Fox Mulder - someone who the audience was supposed to relate to - was searching for this truth. Lost works in a similar capacity in that whilst each episode could be watched as a one-off, it would not gain the same enjoyment as watching it continuously throughout each series. It is 'deeper' in that it contains not only singular storylines which are worked upon to create tension, but also utilises it's ability to create abnormal situations throughout series in a way that gives it a 'deeper meaning', only recognisable to those who desire to understand it.

Cult TV requires a certain level of depth to captivate the viewer? Not sure on that one

Iv been told before that Teletubbies is cult television!

I think cult tv is defined as something a small group of people can enjoy whilst knowing the masses will not gain anything from it

You could almost liken it to a shared joke experience among friends

Well, whether it be an intellectual depth or a depth in terms of creativity, it is still a depth. Although I admit I didn't make myself completely clear with that, I still feel that Cult TV requires something beyond the superficial level upon which it is enjoyed.

And your actually comparing Teletubbies with Lost? Wink Hope someone gets the Lost reference there.

But i clearly said 'dont understand OR appreciate', lol.

But thats not the point really..We are 'willing' to try and understand it..alot of people are not willing to understand it or they simply dont understand it, as in they dont 'like' it..it does appeal to them etc. Im not saying that I understand everything in Lost..of course I dont..but i understand many of the shows messages, symbolic references and i enjoy it etc.

Lol, But that is exactly the kind of thing i was referring to..hence, they dont UNDERSTAND it. They think it's just another show..unlike many of us, they dont understand that it is different and very rewarding etc etc.

Lost captures the mind and the intellectual capacity in all our minds. What other show has sparked such wonderful theories, research and general good ole gossip about it? How much other stuff have you all learnt just by watching lost and being on this forum.

*General comment*

Alot of 'fans' didnt particualrly enjoy S1..yet i absolutely loved it!..so no matter what anyone says it wont deflect my love for the show..at the end of the day it a game of opinions..I know some people who didnt enjoy '48 Days' episode, for example, yet it's now one of my top 4 episodes ever! So no amount of someone's opinion will make me think Lost is anything but fantastic. Only my own opinion can do that.

I mean you could tell me that you hated the next 10 or whatever episodes yet i wouldnt care..your opinion and taste may be different from mine..i will still look forward and relish each episode unless I myself think otherwise.

I respect peoples opinions on the actual content of the show and enjoy hearing their viewpoints etc..but when it comes to someone simply slagging off the entire season [before ive even seen it all myself] it just reinforces me to critique each episode more fairly and using my own opinion.
