I heard a noise...thought it was just the plane's metal crunching....
Will have to go re-check.

i heard something that sounded like the monster but just thought it was the sound of the plane crashing, perhaps it was the monster though, watching on from the shore
I thought I heard it as well!!! Oooooh, just thought, did we hear the monster sound before or after Goodwin appeared? If so does this mean the Others are connected to the Monster, i.e. controlling him?
Haven't you heard the theory that the "monster" is the ghost of the plane yet?
Not that anyone's yet come up with a satisfactory explanation for how that could actually work in plot terms without mangling the gritty tones of the series. Still, it gets you thinking.
The noise of the plane crashing is the noise of the monster - or one of them anyway. You can hear it when the plane sheers apart in the pilot episodes, and the dying engine on the beach makes a very similar noise to one in the monster's repertoire as well.
In addition, the noise the black smoke monster thing made when it darted through the jungle in Exodus was identical to a)Locke's adding machine in Walkabout and b)the countdown in the hatch when it whirs round to 108.
All this possibly ties in with the jungle whispers (which, as we now know thanks to those generous people who have de-crypted them, recite fragmented memories of the castaways, typically of the nastier variety), the premonitions, and the assorted apparitions of the island. The plane crash would be high on the castaways' list of bad memories, so a very powerful manifestation of the island's mysterious (psychic?) influence might very well use the sound of the crash to instil fear.
