Yes, i certainly feel that the 'Lord of the flies' references is used to help depict the situation at hand..to help illustrate and reinforce the feel of chaos and anarchy, which was certainly the case when Ana-Lucia [mistakenly] killed Shannon and before that when the tailes had to survive the Others.

It's interesting how civilised norms become redundant when no law and order is in place..i suppose the challenge is for them to develop and adhere to their own norms and standards because right now, unlike the 'Others'..they have no/little order..no one true leader. Despite what Jack may think Wink

What was this reference? I missed it! But I have always felt that the whole lost story had a lot of lord of the flies in it.

I completely agree with that. They will have to build their own society that is relevent to the situation which they are in, and not try to make it exactly as the ones they have come from.

Yeah sorry I was tired at the time LOL

Once again I agree with you Rocco (what is happening to me today LOL)

I do think however that whilst they dont have a ture leader, they have those who perhaps take leadership descions or those that they look to make those descions. Sayid did it to start with but the group booted him out and elected Jack so to speak LOL Wonder if they now regret that choice?

Well in Season 1 [In Translation]..Jin ran off because people thought that he had burnt the raft..anyway Sawyer found him, and said "it's lords of the flies time now" [or something like that]..a perfect depiction of the situation in that episode.

Then in the last C4 episode Charlie [referring the to tailenders] said to Kate "Looks like they had a rought time of it..apparently it was like Lord of the flies out there" [or words to that effect].

One of my favourite quotes by him, and the way he says it too...was in before or after he kicked Jin in the head? LOL!

Lord of the Flies is one of the greatest books ever written. It's about a bunch of boys who are being taken away due to war. They crash on an island, no adults, no civilisation and we watch how they turn from educated school boys to savages. It's fantastic...you should read it again! Big Grin

You know, I was thinking the exact same thing, lol! I think it was after but I cant be sure. I love that scene though..the way the camara went really close to Sawyer's face and like you mentioned, his delivery of that line was fantastic! Cool

Yeah thats because the writers intentionally use real world references, books, films etc in order to make the programme layered and make it more relevent to more people. But they also use such references to portray messages.

References such as LOTF, watership down, leonardo di vinci etc are used as interpretations and reflections on society and so is 'Lost'..so Lost just uses them in an imaginative way which not only bleeds so well into the story/plot/theme of Lost but also allows lost to become more layered and significant to the viewer. imo.
