Yeah thats because the writers intentionally use real world references, books, films etc in order to make the programme layered and make it more relevent to more people. But they also use such references to portray messages.
References such as LOTF, watership down, leonardo di vinci etc are used as interpretations and reflections on society and so is 'Lost'..so Lost just uses them in an imaginative way which not only bleeds so well into the story/plot/theme of Lost but also allows lost to become more layered and significant to the viewer. imo.
