Ok, well my theory is that the 'Others' are ShapeShifters.. they simply pick a target and display themselves as they feel appropriate.
During the first series Walt read the magazine with the polar bear, and then it just appeared.
Also in the first series, on the last epesode i belive, the 'Rafters' all WANTED to find someone to resuce them, they wanted people on a boat to come take them to civilisation, so the ShapeShifters obviously displayed themselves in that human form.
During the second series Shannon wanted to find Walt, she wanted him back on the island and then... Voila, there he was.
Later on Sayid who previously couldnt see Walt WANTED to believe shannon, so now the shapeshifter displays himself as Walt for him too
Finally when kate is worried about that murder of her step dad, she was reminded of the incident by Sawyer and her key memory was that black horse..
I think thats enough evidence for now, the ShapeShifters natural form is the black smoke and if they cannot find a form to change into, this is what they display themselves as.
This theory may be farfetched but it sound reasonable, agree?
Yeah , it does sound farfetched and I do doubt it's true , but it is very interesting all the same . You've got enough evidence there too ! Interesting , but just a bit too farfetched that the black smoke can turn into humans . . .
i hope that it dosnt turn into a sci fi fantasy shappy alieny thing it will be a waste of a show that was, i think that they were just coincidences though.
Agreed, but all the signs suggest that any fantasy elements will be paranormal in nature rather than extra-terrestrial. Bearing in mind all the uncanny events on the list, there's no getting away from that now without resorting to a gargantuan Scooby Doo-style anticlimax (presumably involving heaps of implausible conjuring tricks to explain away all the ghosts, concealed speakers for the whispers, trapdoors and mirrors behind every tree etc - which could be the case, although I suspect the writers would struggle to come up with a satisfying reason why...).
At any rate, pure realism seems unlikely, and fantasy would be preferable to science-fiction (if only to minimise the risk of technobabble). The two can be successfully married (cf. "Quatermass and the Pit", "H P Lovecraft", and on rare occasions even "Doctor Who"), but if the source of electromagnetic interference on the island turns out to be a buried UFO, I for one will not be a happy bunny...
I didn't mean to put those inverted commas around H P Lovecraft. He was definitely a real person, and not a story title, as I have unfortunately implied...
