There was an article on a skins forum from the telegraph, and one paragraph at the end says this:

Skins may be a British rival to Friends but the drama is set in a sixth-form college, so when this lot leave at the end of this year, the focus will switch to the new intake, led by Effy. Soon it's goodbye to Sid, Jal, Maxxie et al. The actors must now go their separate ways. All now have agents. Dev Patel has the lead role in Danny Boyle's Slum Boy Millionaire, but for the rest it's an agonising time of waiting and hoping. Adventures don't always turn out as well in real life as they do in Skins, but emotionally literate, worldly wise contemporary teenagers know that.

Someone ove rat IMDB said Mike Bailey was asked about this in an interview. Apparently he just laughed and said their contracts haven't been renewed because they want to see how successful Series 2 will be.
It was printed in The Sun as well originally I think, so that just speaks for itself

i know this is sooooooo annoying!! i heard this the other day on another forum .. but if you look at sids blog on e4.com it says " sad sad sad day drinking vodka and coke but cant say why" or words like that. but the "why he cant say" bit makes me think its very true this is there last series! it soo sucks im well annoyed!

Their contracts haven't been renewed, not meaning they won't be in series 3. Its just to make sure that series 2 goes well b4.

oh wow...that's such a shame. i really love the whole cast - but i dunno; i guess they have to do what's best for themselves as actors maybe?

how selfish of them thinking of them selfs! they should think of the program and us! not there hole lives :P haha

If that happens I don't think it will work.

If at the end of this series it already comes to the end of their second year at college, I think that they should just end it there.

Otherwise if it goes on with new people, it's just gonna end up like the Power Rangers

I really hope that the end of this series isnt already the end of the college year.
I thought about this when maxxie said he would do one year in college.

I hope they just end it if they all go there seperate ways. New cast might make it go downhill.. but who knows!

i dont think it would be as bad as everyone is making it out it could be.
now that effy has started talking, she'll prove to be a good character.
there were a few examples in episode 1 which made me think that she is strong enough to lead the new next group. she made me laugh alot when she was sat on the toilet and the water squirted up her bum and she went "oooh la la".
and when she took tony to the party. i know they were small bits of only the first episode, but i think over this series she'll show the potential to be a great lead.
have some faith.
