I've just started a job earning 17k a year and I had expected to get arround £1,050 per month but have only got £995 after tax and NI, please could someone who's got a better understanding of these things than me tell me if that sounds right??
You are right in what you thought about £1050. It is probably something to do with your last job, the length of time between ending this one and starting that one. It will resolve itself, but if you are worried speak to your Wages department or manager and they will explain it to you. It won't be anything to worry about and if there is a discrepancy it will come up at the end of the tax year and if you've overpaid you will get it refunded.
I had something similar myself when I started this job and it was correct the next month. Doesn't mean it's a mistake, just something connected with your last earnings.

Thank you so much for your reply, at least I know i'm not loosing the plot, I know tax is high in this country but even so! I was temping for quite a while before this job so it's probably because of that and just hasn't sorted its self out yet.
It might be that you have been put on an emergency tax code which doesn't allow you your tax free earnings and takes money off you from the start. Check that you are on the correct code. My aunt has just recieved a £8000 rebate as she was on the wrong code for years. Unfortunately they can only back pay up to something like 5 years, so she didn't get it all back!
