Does anyone know of anyway or any company where I can get a credit card without having a job or regular income. I've got quite a large amount of money in savings would this make a difference?

Do you *need* a creditcard ? Wouldn't a debitcard from your bank be enough?

First place to try for a creditcard would be your own bank and see what they say. I think you might have trouble without a regular income.

The alternative is prepay creditcards, but if you are going to go down that road you might as well just use a debitcard from your bank and avoid the charges.

It depends on what type of credit card you are looking for. American Express are willing, under certain conditions, to accept new card members with 'independent means' (those will have to be proven by way of private accounts or other reputable, independent contacts you should be able to provide)

Your best bet would be Capital One they do a card designed to help your credit rating, you might get a low credit limit though they start at just £200

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try Amex and Capital One. I was also considering trying the bank I have my savings with.

you can always get another credit card as long as you haven't been blacklisted, that way you transfer the balance and avoid paying interest.

^^^Agree.

I'm getting a credit card next Jan, but one thats a few months interest free: I pay for my car insurance in one go cos its cheaper so that will let me pay it off in stages

I know people my age (20) who have maxed out 3 credit cards and for no reason. They complain but they've only got themselves to blame. No-one forces you to get a credit card and no-one forces you to max it out...

I agree with that in principle. I am in a similar position and have only a debit card.

There *are* still benefits though. You pay the bill later and so can earn interest on your money longer. And credit cards provide protection for certain payments.

I agree about cover when buying things (ie online etc), however to claim you can earn interest on your money for longer is a false economy.

You best tax-free savings is about 5%, whereas your best creditcard interest is about 15%

If you get 0% on new purchases for a set period then fine, but read the small print about fees for doing so. Furthermore, you'd have to spend thousands on your creditcard for the interest gained on your savings to be of any value.

I wouldn't touch capital one with a bargepole - their interest alone is astronomical.

Ask yourself why you want a credit card? do you it for ease of use? or are you after 'credit' - if you just want ease of use then go for a debit card. If you are after credit then you will find that most companies who are prepared to give a crdit card to someone without a job will be charging you premium rates for doing so.

Or... Why don't you use the savings you have to buy whatever it is you need a credit card for. That way, your not paying interest on the money (which would be more than the interest your making on the savings).

If you are finding it hard to get a credit card then why not open up a standard bank account bank account with a main high street bank. They often offer you a credit card on top of that whne you application is successful.

You are making a false assumption here. You are assuming that when the interest free period ends the poster will have (and maintain) an outstanding balance, Why have you automatically assumed that?
