This week's challenge is again a departure from the norm. We're not after the price for a particular product, we want you to come up with how far you can travel on public transport for a tenner or less. The more miles you cover, the better!

You can take any form of public transport and you can use several forms of public transport or just one - it's up to you. Please keep your travels within the UK.

Tell us how far you travelled, and we'll give the best tipster The Which? Good Food Guide 2006. This highly-regarded restaurant bible is packed full of information on over 1,200 of the best UK eateries. More on this week's challenge here. More on past challenges.

Please note: Challenge deadline is Monday 1st May.

CHALLENGE RULES
  • If you've won the challenge in the past SIX weeks, you're not eligible to win the prize. Please feel free though to bargain hunt with everyone else
  • Genuine items only. No fakes
  • No currency conversions. All challenge finds in sterling only please
  • No foreign websites or deals
  • No ebay deals unless it's an affiliated store with lots of positive feedback. The item also must be new and there has to be more than one in stock
  • Bonus points schemes, Nectar points and other cashback promotions or awards points are fair game: bargain hunters are encouraged to use their initiative!
  • The Editor's decision is final.

I've found a funfare seat on National Express coaches. The prices start from £1 and I have found a £1 seat from Aberdeen to London on 20 May at 19.00 hrs. The remaining money would give another seat to Taunton (from London) travelling after your arrival on 21st. From here you can return to London (again £1), go back up to Aberdeen (again £1). The whole journey could be repeated again and then use the last £2 to travel from Aberdeen and back up to London. I think you'd be sick of the journey but at least you'll have travelled a long way.

So really the journey is Aberdeen to Taunton return but if you really want to travel the furthest (that would cost £4) then 5 return trips from Aberdeen to London!

National Express

Ed if you want the distance then Aberdeen to London is 551 miles. Times this by 10 (for 5 return journeys) then it's 5,510 miles travelled for a tenner. Big Grin

Nice one Peachbutty, will be a challenge to beat that.

Could you suvive the journey though!

I use these £1 Fun Days from time to time, its a great way to get low cost travel although they are limited and you have to book well in advance.

I doubt I could Kudos Eek I got back from the Philippines yesterday and travelled for 30 hours to get home - pure hell - now I know why they call it long haul. 5 coach trips from Aberdeen to London would take about 5 days (12 hours each trip, each way) so I think I'll give that one a miss Big Grin

OK not as far but South West Trains:
The Megatrain scheme offers a range of fares depending on how early a passenger books but none are over £10.
The cheapest return fare from London to Southampton is £2.50. This is about 150 miles return.
So do this 4 times for a tenner = 600miles!

Oops just did Southampton return for £2
09:55 Depart Southampton Central
Arrive London Waterloo 11:34 1 seat = £1.00
21:39 Depart London Waterloo
Arrive Southampton Central 23:16 1 seat = £1.00

http://www.megatrain.com/
This ups the mileage to about 750 miles

May not be as far as the bus but a lot quicker!

Get an Oyster card for £9 - this gives you unlimited travel on the underground for 6 days @£1.50 for an adult in Zone 1.
http://www.ukstudentlife.com/Travel/Transport/London/Underground.htm#Planning
The circle line is 13 miles round and you can travel an average of 40 times in a day and (av. 30 min journey time)= 520 miles x 6 days =3120 miles

Thanks for the link I did not know there was a daily cap on the Oyster card of £4.90 I normally buy a £5.40 travelcard when I go into town at weekends as I thought it was the cheepest way.

You have to pay £3 for the card but I save 50 a day.

This trip is not as far as any of the previous but it does involve four different forms of transport and does not send you dizzy on the Circle Line all day.
Start in Gosport and take the Gosport ferry to Portsmouth Harbour (£1.80). Take a South West Train to London Waterloo (megatrains throughout the day for as little as £1). Take the tube to London Victoria (£3 or you could save the money and walk). Take a megabus from London Victoria to Aberdeen (again fares from £1). Total fare of £6.80. That still leaves you £3.20 change to spend as wildly as you please.

And I thought years of commuting from Bucks to Canary Wharf in years gone by was bad enough!... Anyway, congrats to this week's winner wiggy71. We were impressed with the four modes of transport he or she managed to cram into just £6.80. Not too sure how wild you could be with £3.20, though! Well done - Which guide for you. Ed
