I read thye article on Rob's bog up in Smoke and felt it did not represent the actual posiiton of FoE or many campaigners who feel incineration is the only answer to dealing with the problem.
In this article it says "I respect the work of both these organisations but this is the typical eco warrior approach. It’s like saying; 'I wouldn’t start from here if I was you'. The point is we can’t be somewhere else. "
Friends of the Earth has a clear brief (available at its website) of how it would address the current situation -not just the one most people would prefer we were in. They have looked at legislation and practicalities and still maintains it stance against incineration as there ARE alternatives available today.
The organic part of waste is the bit that causes climate change problems BUT contrary to what Rob says THERE are collections and treatment infrasturture available for paper and cardboard, textiles, green and in some places food waste across Britain. It may not be total coverage but if you look at WRAP's ORIS map it gives the details -see
http://www.wrap.org.uk/local_authorities/online_recycli...stem_oris/index.html.
The need to deal with the waste does require more infrastructure -but that can be either incineration OR other technologies that can treat waste to reduce its climate change impact and if chosen well can produce a usable product.
So the push for burning is not as strong as Rob sugest and FoE are not unpractrical campaigners who do not have practical answers for the problems we all face.
