I bring my own bags to the supermarket, and always reuse carrier bags, but the one area i am stumped about is my cats litter & its contents - her trays need cleaned out a few times a day, and whilst i try to use the same bag for at least a day its not always nice having a bag of cat poo sitting in the kitchen!! does anyone have any ideas about what i could use instead? i had thought about paper bags, like the type you would get in the supermarket to put your mushrooms in.... but where can you bulk buy them? i cant compost the stuff - i live in a 2nd floor apartment and dont have a compost heap - i would really appreciate any ideas!! thanks!!
the only green answer to the question is compost it. poo breaks down very well in saw dust, which is what cat litter is, it just needs to be able to breath, be in the open and not in a container. So my only suggestion if you dont have any space to compost your self is to look for somewhere outside nearby you can put it to quietly compost away. Have dedicated container in the to store the cat litter in at home and take it out with you when you go out. It would break down very quickly under a hedge row, shrubs or some trees if there is a any open ground nearby - the plants will love it. If you think about that is exactly what would have happened if you cat had gone outside in the first place. Making a big compost heap just hurries up the decomposition process, spreading over the ground works almost as well, just use a variety of different places and you will be amazed how quickly it will disappear. Try it with a bit and see what happens... good luck
I was under the impression that it is not safe to compost dog or cat poo, in the same way that it isn't safe to compost human poo - you need very high temperatures to destroy all the toxic stuff, particularly those that cause toxoplasmosis.
You can buy compostable dog-poo bags from Pets at Home, and they aren't very expensive, and are usually single use. They might work for you.
I have a personal problem with cats - they are themselves very environmentally damaging creatures - unlike almost any other animal, they kill and harass most of the animals that are useful for organic gardeners, and most cat owners are (unlike yourself) very lazy, seeing a cat as a pet that you don't have to monitor, letting themselves out and pooing wherever they like.
I just wish all cat owners were as considerate as you seem to be!
