good question! yes there is undoubtedly more energy embodied in a fluorescent lighbulb.. so they do cost the environment more to produce. Sorry that I don't have any figures for this, but due to fact that they last so much longer and use a fraction of the energy than the old style bulbs when in use, I would imagine they move into net energy saving with a few short weeks of being used.

How ever much energy it takes , you will pay for it in the price, so if the bulb pays for itself during it's life then it follows that the overall energy must be less.
