I watched the first episode of the program dump which i think is an interesting program. But what has been made very clear is the fact that plastic is the problem. why when it comes to recycle that the plastic is not collected and then the rest can go to the land fill sites as its degradable my local council makes us put carbboard to one side and also the green bins to one side. but when it come to collection it all gets put on the same lorry, why? its the same with food bins it all goes on the same lorry. have i lost the plot here.
I don't know what sort of system your council has but i believe some councils use vehicles with individual compartments for the types of waste.
My council has a collection for recycleables one week and non-recycleables the next.
Recycleables are sorted partly by people and partly by machine at a special recycling centre. Ideally in the UK we need to get home owners do sort their rubbish into different types, but i think it is to soon to introduce this idea.
Regarding plastic, it is very difficult to identify and sort the different types. My council will only take plastic bottles.
There is also a problem with heat resistant toughened glass used more now in kitchen stuff, such as kettles. Such glass can not be melted and recycled with standard glass used for bottles and jars.
I have got to the stage now where i examine the packaging used on a product category and buy a brand that uses the least and/or most environmentally friendly.
Another option with meat and veg is to use a butcher and greengrocer, since they often use thin plastic bags or even paper bags (for veg), where as supermarkets use more substantial packaging to make it easier to stack and display products.
Our Council appears to have aquired, brand new Mercedes flat trucks. All shiney and expensive, with individual box containers on the back.
I would have thought it's government/EU grant fiddles, as to cover he costs they'd have to collect scrap for a 1000 years to even get close to drawing even.

Well actually the cost of recycling should be included in the cost of buying the product. That would cover the cost of the mercedes lorry. But because you aren't willing to pay the cost or recycling when you buy a product or the supermarket is unwilling to pass on that cost, then the money comes out of council tax.
You pay one way or another for the waste you create. If you don't want to pay for the merc lorry then don't waste so much!
come to think of it, i dont think my council does recyling either. or at least its very discreet if it does. my mums a recyling addict-i think she'd go mad if she lived here!

Some people will always believe there is some sort of conspiracy with recycling.
At work i am member on one of the environmental committees and I know some staff are often convinced that the our paper isn't recycled. People form their own little conspiracies and belief systems in communities, specially when it comes to paying for something.
All councils should be doing some recycling now and they will have no choice in the future but to increase it.
