No, I recall when they first appeared in shops. They were bigger and much tougher and you had to pay 3d I think for one. Before that they sold strong brown paper carrier bags with a string handle that cut into your fingers if you had anything heavy in them. If it rained they went soggy and the bottom fell out! My mum always sent me to the shops with her own shopping bags and a basket for the bread and eggs.
