Every day I get 5-10 pieces of junk mail through my letterbox. It annoys me not because it is junk but because I believe in being more aware of our environment. Even recycling takes energy so it's better not to use paper when we don't need to in the first place, one of the reasons I love E-mail!

I write or telephone every company who puts junk mail through my door and ask them to please stop. Most are very accommodating and understand my point of view. However I telephoned my Local Labour councillor and asked the same. I received a very obnoxious letter telling me that it was his right to put his promotional material through my door because it was a free country and he could do what he wanted. He was exceedingly rude. The Labour party are always telling us we "need to be more green". Unfortunately it seems a case of "do as I say not do as I do".

Anyway, the question is... Does he have a point? Is it the right of anyone to send you junk mail when you asked them not to? Does freedom of speech also relate to someone else's letterbox, and with that their responsibility to dispose of said junk mail (which may soon cost us money)and extend to their right be not be green. What do you think?

Your MP does have a point...I suppose he feels he has a right to free speech (even if you choose not to read his bumpf).

You can sign up to not receive any unaddressed junk mail (Royal Mail door-to-door opt out), but that will also mean that you don't get any charity leaflets, voting leaflets, free papers, local and central government advisory material, etc. It also won't stop anything addressed "To the occupier".

MPS deals with the addressed mail, but isn't able to stop all of it.
