Dr Hamish Meldrum, respected Chairman of the British Medical Association has spoken out on the tendency for doctors to classify overeating as an illness and not as a result of some underlying emotional issue. Meldrums comments will inevitably raise a furore within the drugs industry who see anti obesity treatments as an increasing demand in our greedy society.
The facts are stark, starving people are never obese. British obesity indicates greed on the part of the affluent. it is not an illness and the NHS should not treat it as such.
I think a lot more eat out of depression to make themselves feel better. Then there is people that dont consider the consequences of what they eat but regret after when they start to think about it. I dont consider these to be greed.
Access to decent groceries and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables will work miracles with the health of many people in Britain.
Many local markets and shops have closed down because we choose to drive to Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys. What about the elderly . . especially, those reliant on public transport?
Not forgetting, ofcourse, young families . . I'm very much in favour of bags of fruit being handed out during play time in schools up and down the country.
i think one of the main problems here is that organic healthy food is very expensive in comaprison to 'freezer food' that you can purchase from all these big superstores! whenever i shop in my local market i always find that the organics foods are so much more expensive! it makes it easier for people to go for the cheap fatty food option!
Obesity is not a black and white issue. Yes many people who are overweight just simply do over-eat/eat the wrong things/don't exercise. However, this does not ring true for a lot of overweight people whose weight has an underlying cause.
Debates of this nature will never be resolved because you cant generalise to every single overweight/obese person in the UK. The same is true of other "ilnesses" such as drug abuse or alcoholism.
