The future is the post-apocalyptic earth, after many years of global warming and rising sea levels. This "island" is actually the peak of a large mountain, once located in Antarctica.
After the original Dharma time-travel project, past the present time, The Dharma company realized that rising sea levels would wipe out the human race. They decided to colonize the area in the Antarctic with a surviving group of humans, thus the Others. The Others are the last surviving remnants of human beings on the planet.
The Others were left with all human records, including the information on one flight 815 that disappeared completely in September of 2004. All of the passenger information was (or will be?) in one big Other Library.
When Benry told Jack about the major events that had happened (Red Sox winning the series, Bush being reelected etc) since the plane crash, he had been basically reading a history book.
When Desmond went off in the boat and returned saying there was nothing out there, he was telling the truth. The whole world has been submerged by the rising oceans.
Desmond hasn't been made clairvoyant. He's been to the near future and back due to the implosion of the Swan. He doesn't quite realize what he's experienced or where (when) he's been.
Desmond's girl Penelope is on to the whole Time rift thing. She's got a couple of Portuguese scientists sitting near the area in the Antarctic, mapping out magnetic disturbances.
The black smoke is a somewhat human manifestation of the time rift. It wants to survive. It uses the memories of those who threaten it to defend itself.

Thats good...it makes loads of sense. but wait. I ahven't been watching lost all of the way, so...could someone tellme (or remind me) how Desmond actually got onto the island?
...jump too episode where he meets Jack Shephard running around at the same stadium.
After a short conversation, Desmond departs, using the phrase "See you in another life brother".
The race around the world is set to start in America, and Desmond is ready and waiting, only still without a boat. In a twist of fate, he meets Libby in a cafe, and she buys him a cup of coffee for $4. He jokingly asks her for $42,000, to buy a boat. In the ensuing conversation, he tells Libby about the race, and to his surprise Libby reveals she has a boat named Elizabeth that belonged to her late husband. Desmond takes the boat, promising to win the race in the name of love. However, whilst sailing across the Pacific, the boat is hit by a storm, and Desmond is knocked unconscious.
On the Island Desmond awakes on the beach, as a man in a biohazard suit runs towards him. Blacking out once more, Desmond finally regains his senses inside the Swan station. The man who found him identifies himself as Kelvin, and he tells him that the outside environment is contaminated, and that his exposure might mean he is sick. Giving him a vaccine labeled CR 4-81516-23 42, he tells Desmond to inject himself with it every 9 days. Kelvin then explains the operation procedure in the station, including information about the button and the failsafe switch, the key to which Kelvin carries on his person.

Radiation and Evolution (whidmore-hanso connection, why the losties are special, the statue, the vaccine)
If Darwin was correct, and evolution is a process of genetic mutation/gene expression which confers environmental advantage and perpetuates through breeding, the fastest way to create genetic mutation outside of a laboratory is through exposure to radiation.
“Mutations are changes to the genetic material and are considered the driving force in evolution. Mutations can be caused by copying errors in the genetic material during cell division and by exposure to radiation, chemicals (mutagens), or viruses."
If the Hanso foundation is interested in eugenics programs and building a superhuman, one of the best ways to do that might be to create genetic mutation and selectively breed or replicate that gene sequence.
It is possible that the Losties were identified by Whidmore corporation, who we already know has a medical laboratory company, as having advantageous genetic mutations... it is possible that all of them at one point or another had blood work done by a family physician sent to Whidmore Labs for processing, and that Whidmore was paid by Hanso to secretly conduct gene sequencing on the samples they recieved and report the results to Hanso.
Radiation exposure is also linked to chromosomal abnormalities in blood lymphocytes and leads to decreased immunity over time. It is possible that “the vaccine” is merely a strong antibiotic or antiviral that serves as protection for a large group of people with decreased immunity living in close proximity.
The producers have also said that Walt’s aging would be able to be explained if he came back in future episodes; there is a theory called “radiation aging” that could account for this phenomenon, I won’t get into it here, but google it to find out more.
We know that Hanso is interested in evolution, and some have suggested that the 4 toed statue is an homage to the evolving human, who, it is throught, will eventually lose the pinkie toe.

Gene therapy is also (IMO) why the polar ebars are no longer carniverous (in the cage grain and a fish biscuit were released on working out "that complicated gizmo"). I think alot of research has been going into gene therapy, It was in its infancy when the scientists first went to the island in the late 70's but they have contact with the outside world so their research and testing methods as well as their expertise and knowledge would be growing all of the time. They should for example have the sequence for the human genome.
The blast door map definatley confirms this kind of testing was occuring, what we dont know as of yet, is how they were manipulating the genes. Were they using radiation? Were they already in possession of the genenome project materials long before the rest of the world? Were they changing the genes before/at/after conception? How? Replacment or modification? Could the islands magnetism have been harnessed for this purpose? Does anyone know if magnetism of any kind can interfere with genes? Many questions on the gene therapy to be answered

Magnets may one day drag genes around the body in a novel form of gene therapy, says a Swiss scientist.
The magnets would be attracted to iron oxide nanoparticles attached to the genes, a concept that has been tested in sheep.
But many safety tests would be needed before this technology could be used in humans, says Professor Heinrich Hofmann of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland.
Hofmann reported his findings at the International Conference on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Brisbane last week.
Gene therapy has been beset with problems including the lack of a safe and effective vector to transport therapeutic genes into cells.
Hofmann says his iron oxide nanoparticles are safer than commonly used viral vectors, which can mutate and influence the DNA of cells.
