This one still puzzles me too. I don't think Charlie's death was for nothing. Maybe Desmond's vision wasn't exactly correct remember it was Clare and Aaron he saw and at least Aaron made it off the island in the helicoptor. He wasn't exactly correct about Naomi coming to the island as he thought it would be someone else. Maybe the visions are not reliable on the whole just in part. Or as has been mentioned Clare will eventually get off the island if she is still alive. I am assuming that Aaron will return with 06 so maybe his vision has yet to be proved.

Maybe after he started trying to control fate by saving Charlie so many times this mucked up his visions... not sure how that all works!

It hasn't been explained in S4. As I have said in a previous post above I don't think Charlie's death was for nothing. By going down to the looking glass and turning off the orange light he did allow the Losties to make contact with the freighter which lead to the 06 plus two other people being rescued.

The device he had to switch off in the looking glass station was created by a musician which may have meant that perhaps Charlie was the only one who could switch it off.

..maybe Des was only seeing possibilities. It must be possible to change the the future to a certain extent because he kept seeing Charlie die but he kept saving him, changing the outcome of his visions.

In addition maybe it wasn't Charlie who was the only one who could do it. We have seen both Jack and Ben playing the piano so they have a little music experience.....mmmmmmmm

Do you mean that because Widmore changed the rules that Desmond's visions would now be untrue or altered in some way?

You may be right. I was thinking along the lines of the rules being changed was referring to the Ben and Widmore relationship. Ben said it after Keamy had killed Alex so I took it to mean that Ben and Widmore had established certain rules between them one of which was not to kill family members.

Desmond's visions are the result of the Swan exploding and the time jumping etc so I don't see how Widmore changing the rules would effect that. I may be totally wrong though. In Lost anything is possible

Your right - it just goes on, which make Lost such addictive viewing
