Well, hurley was the one who told him that they need to go back. There's obviously something that they find out in future that makes them need to go back, but what? Another plane crash?

Yeah, I think there is a very good reason Jack wants to go back. Same as Hurleys reason! Whatever that is!

What I dont understand is why Kate DOESNT want to go back!

how come Kate manages to get away scot free when the cops were after her? hmm, maybe she got back without any authorities knowing.
maybe they think she's dead and don't bother searching for her.

The actress who plays Kate (sorry I am not even going to attempt to spell her name) said that there is a story surrounding how she doesn't get sent to prison, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I presume from her wording that the authorities DO know though.

Jack and Hurley want to go back to the island because ABC are luring them with a big payrise.
if they stay in the real world the series ends.

Kate doesn't want to go back as she wants to do movies, plus the writers have run out of storylines.

I have read how Kate gets away with it all Luxy, (am a sucker for spoilers!) and it is a big shocker (if its right) I think you may have read it on a different thread.

Thinking about it, it is probably also the reason she doesnt want to go back.
