The fictional reality theory has come up in many forms, they are all in Santa Rosa having therapy, it's all in Hurley's head, etc.
I think this would also be the most disappointing ending or explanation for the show, if after five years we find out that none of that happened there will be a lot of PO people...

I'm more interested in why then how. Having it all be in one persons head would give you an answer to everything, there would be no need to tell us what the black smoke was, what the whispers were, because they're can all be explained by the "it didn't happen" answer...

Cristian Sheppard does seem to be an important character but I'm still unsure why? He does have quite a few connections, but what is the nature of those connections?
Personally I steer away from the conspiracy angle, IMO the six degrees of seperation thing is far less important than people think it is. It's an idiom of the show's writing that keeps us watching and interested in the flashbacks, but most are superficial...
