I have had an idea about the numbers after trying to peice together the video extracts from the Lost Experience.
Thinking it was quite an obvious assumption to make I did search the forums to see if this has been discussed and only discovered 1 passing reference to it by Apollo Rising a while ago.
The Lost Experience mentions that an equation by Valensetti predicts how long mankind can survive before it destroys each other - there is a small clip of a man writing the equation on a blackboard but he stands infront of it so we cannot see what he is writing, the first number may be four, the second number is most definitley 8 - therefore the numbers could reflect the equation.
Now, if the equation represents how long before people destroy each other, does this bring a new concept to why the losties are on the island - is this a real life lord of the Flies after all - and are the arguments between Jack and Locke just the beginnings of a split on the island?
In truth who knows? I am still not convinced there was no plane crash - but I am beginning to believe the crash was destined to happen! Anyone any thoughts?
We are stuck in a bloody snow globe.
my big 5 are: Sayid, Sawyer, Hurley, Desmond and Jin... THEY MUST NOT DIE!!
Just realised the bit about 'obvious comment' sounds really pompous and up myself, it wasn't meant to, i just wanted to make sure I wasn't nicking someone elses ideas!

Possible *SPOILERS* ahead for anyone not doing or viewing The Lost Experience. It is all just theories when applying it to Lost though.
It would seem that the Valenzetti Equation contains both The Numbers and the Egyptian glyphs from the 108 counter (mentioned in Rachel Blakes interview at The Vik Institute), but probably the more important thing is to learn...
a) that the equation is designed to predict the obliteration of mankind.
b) that The Vik Institute had solved the equation and "arrived at a figure" before it burned down.
Lets couple these facts with the purpose of The Swan Station.
The Swan seems to me largely designed to study the effect of electro-magnetic fields.
A Danish satellite "Ørsted" was launched on February 23, 1999. Its purpose is to map the Earth's magnetosphere and record any electro-magnetic polar anomalies. It circles the Earth at a little over every 100 mins (close enough to 108, who knows?). 20 years prior to this the Americans had launched a satelllite for similar purposes called Magsat, it broadcast data for approximately 1 year. This would have been around the time when the Dharma stations became operational on the Lost Island. Could the orbit time have been 108 mins? I don't know yet, but it seems reasonable to assume it would be similar to Ørsted.
The reason its necessary to look for electro-magnetic polar reversal anomalies is that polar reversal happens on global scale on average every 500,000 years (varies a lot depending on what you read). Apparently that in itself is not such bad thing, however, should it happen in conjunction with the E.M. polar reversal of The Sun we have an entirely different scenario. The Sun's polar reversal occurs once every 11 years like clockwork and will next occur in 2012. During polar reversal, The Sun exudes massive bursts of radiation and the Earth would be scorched if we weren't protected by the magnetosphere.
Apparently it's now something like 720,000 years since there was an E.M. polar revesal on a global scale. So it's overdue. During the reversal there would be a period when the Earth had zero magnetosphere before the poles switch. Should the Valenzetti Equation turn out to be a prediction of a date in 2012 you could be looking at a global catastrophe.
The conjunction of the polar reversal of Earth and Sun can cause the following serious problems, other than electronic malfunction, migrating birds and animals (such as polar bears) losing sense of direction.
The immune system of all animals including humans will weaken substantially.
The earth's crust will experience increasing volcanoes, tectonic movements, earthquakes, tsunamis and landslides.
Cosmic Radiation from Sun will increase many folds making radiation hazards like cancer inevitable
Asteroids could even be drawn towards the Earth.
All in all it would be looking pretty grim for the human race. Could this be the prediction of The Valenzetti Equation?
The Lost Experience tells us that Magnus Hanso was the captain of The Black Rock so could this be the reason Alvar Hanso first investigated the island tracing his grandfathers roots and found it to be an electro-magnetic anomalie, perhaps the perfect place to start experimenting on what would happen to animals and humans in the event of E.M. polar switching. Could it be the perfect place to experiment with gene therapy and create a race of people capable of surviving such a catastrophe. Testing people by puting them through a range of disaster scenearios and seeing whether they can survive. Who knows? I don't, but it could be.
Sorry its so long winded, but let me know what you think. I'll add some links on the end that back up the theory.
Amazing stuff that wow. I can see where this ties in to lost, the stations and the computer. The final episode of this series will tie up alot of lose ends if you havent seen it already as regards to this info. Thanks very much for this (even if it WASNT meant for me ), woah, totally blown away by it all.
They are OBVIOULSY linking the series into the natural expected real events over the next few years.
Is anyone else here beginnning to feel as sad as the most dedicated of trekkies (not sure if I should admit to being a minor fan of the various Trek series either)
Thank you. Namaste. Good Luck.

Have you seen Sri Lanka vid with up to 35 frags now. It confirms presenter is Alvar Hanso. It was an easy one to guess, but its nice to have it confirmed.
I'm now trying to work out if I can see a family resemblence with Rachel Blake.
only a matter of time appollo It'll be wearing rags and rubbing sand in our hair at conventions oh and tatoos which change form one shoulder to the other mid scene
Thank you. Namaste. Good Luck.

Back to your original post: I reckon you could be right that the crash could have happened despite the plane heading towards the island deliberately.
Perhaps the Hanso Foundation has some form of auto-pilot overide to bring subjects for their experiments to the island. Perhaps the pilot was an Other, or was persuaded to change course after being drugged or under hypnosis.
Then at some point it went wrong. Maybe the E.M. feild brought the plane down. However, I can't escape things like the fact that Gary Troup died in the crash, but there wasn't a mark on his body. That alone suggests to me that he was murdered and that the crash was staged. Many other posters have submitted convincing evidence for a staged crash theory.
On the other hand, Gary Troup could concievably have been poisoned on the flight (maybe by Cindy if the crew were all really Hanso employees, that would be a cruel twist) and the flight was deliberatly bringing them there, but the crash only happened when they were already close to landing perhaps at a nearby island.
Oh God, I'm confusing myself now. I'm off for a cup of tea and an Apollo bar.
I really must get a copy of the pilot as its just too hazy in my memory.
When Hurley re-visits Lenny in the mad house, to tell him that he used the numbers to play the lottery and Lenny freaks out saying something like, "you can't use the numbers, you'll open the box". Pandora's box maybe?
Do you think Lenny had solved the Valenzetti Equation, or perhaps belived he had solved it. If Lenny also had access to the glyphs, which in isolation are supposed to to mean "to cause to die". Maybe he believed that Hurley running his numbers through the Lottery computer would cause the end of the world.
That would certainly be worth getting upset about.
If anyone has a transcipt of that piece of dialogue. I'd be much obliged if you'd post it. Cheers.

Okay I'm replying to myself now (I realise how sad this is) but this is a post I made earlier today before I'd seen this link....

Gary Troupe is supposedly turbine man. He was nicknamed "Turbine Man" because he survived the crash, but died shortly after by being sucked into a still running plane engine, something which caused it to explode immediately afterwards.
You can download the pilot episode from all good download places i.e. lime wire where you can get every episode ever shown
Thank you. Namaste. Good Luck.

I should also add that several other theories surrounding Gary Troupe exist:
*Gary Troup died in the Crash.
*Gary Troup was seen as a corpse in the Pilot episode.
*Gary Troup is the Turbine Man. Matt Raggs, writer assistant stated on January 21, 2006: "Gary Troup could have been the turbine guy -- I guess we'll never really know."
*According to a New York Times article published May 27, 2006, the senior vice president of marketing of ABC said: "Troup can be seen being sucked into an airplane engine in the first episode."
*Going against this theory, the actor who plays "Turbine Man" is the stuntman Frank Torres who looks nothing like the actor who plays Gary Troup.
*Gary Troup is an anagram for "Purgatory", "A Group Try" and "Up Gyrator" (which would support the theory that he is the Turbine Man).

Almost forgot. It has been suggested Troup was involved in a romantic relationship with flight hostess, Cindy Chandler, who was also present on Oceanic Flight 815.

gary troup is not turbine man there is a pic of him dead on the plane and im with appollo on the theory of him being poisened by cindy on the flight http://tinypic.com/view/?pic=24dh6hu

Confirmed some stuff I'd already surmised, and put some flesh on the bones of some the mathematical equation angle. Apparently similar to other equations that predict the likelyhood of life on other planets!
btw, "Up Gyrator" really made me laugh. I hope its not a clue though, as I want GT to be the dead guy on the plane with not a scratch on him.
Alot of the theories on there are mental if Im honest, but they are amusing and I quite like to read them Glad you appreciate them in the same way hun I think THAT particular theory was REAL old mans pants. You have to remember. This site is made up of contributions from various ordinary people, not by the lost producers so whilst theres alot of good info, theres also some REAL crud, most of which is funny, sometimes just plain rubbish
Thank you. Namaste. Good Luck.
