I haven't done the lost experience so if you have anything to add or know something is wrong please feel free to comment. I've been looing through various sources and have pieced together information about Dharma and have found some connections between lost and religion. Anything written in bold is my thoughts about the links between lost and dharma.Definition of Dharma or Sanatan Dharma (Hindusim)
Sanatana dharma means enternal law. This is governed by the whole universe and so is the cosmic law or the law of nature. So this expression should not only be a religious reference.
Some people translate Dharma as 'duty'. Everyone should live in harmony with the cosmic (universal) law, that is it's duty and this is what makes up his Dharma.
maybe the others are part of Dharma and it is their duty to see that everyone is following the right path. The meaning behind Sanatana Dharma
You should believe in everything you hear, but figure out for yourself what is the truth. The path of Sanatana Dharma which is the path leading to the discovery of the truth can therefore be also called science.
They shouldn't be pressing the buttons then, as they do not know what it will do if they don't. People have followed religion and do not know the meaning behind all their rituals and symbols. They do not know if everything they practise for is true. This is blind faith and goes against Sanatana Dharma.
Everyone obeys the Sanatana Dharma.
The Sanatana Dharma could be the top dog on the island, also referred to as “Him.” Sin
When people live in harmony with the natural law and with Sanatana Dharma everything is balanced. When this is disrupted they cannot live in this balanced world and so it becomes unstable. They are desperate to regain harmony and balance.
The losties' lives have become unstable and so they were taken to the island to reflect and try to balance their world again. If they want to regaint this balance he should face these experiences, live and overcome them. This is called his Dharma.
Maybe Jack, Kate and Sawyer cannot overcome their experiences. Spoiler **** Maybe that is why they were captured by the others at the end of season 2 **** Consciousness and Nature
In different religions consciousness and nature are represented in different human beings. Adam is the consciousness in Christianity and Eve is the nature. In the Bible the man is represented by the Serpant.
Is the serpent one of the hatches? I'm not sure but I vagely remeber something about it. It is the mind that makes the man think that he is individual. In India Shiva is the consciousness and Parvati is the nature. Parvati conceives a child (who later is called Ganesha.) This child is not created by the consciousness (Shiva) but by nature (Parvarti) This child, the mind prevents Shiva from meeting Parvarti. Parvarti and Shiva cannot combine. Shiva had to replaced the child's head with a head of an elephant, he is now called Ganesha. The child was the creation of Parvarti, Ganesha is the creation of Shiva and so Parvarti and Shiva are united.
Walt seems to have some sort of special powers. Which means he may not be made of nature. Also Sun and Jin, their baby has been made through consciousnees as Jin, couldn't make it happen through nature. This may be why the others want the children. They need to keep the union of nature and consciousness. Locke was told by his mother that he was conceived imaculately, he is a child of nature. Rama (consciousness) and Sita (nature). Sita is kidnapped by Ravana who is the mind and ego. This sperates Sita from Rama. The line not to be passed is the Lakshmanrekha. Once the line is passed, it will fall. Rama needs a life journey to reach Sita. Rama needs to defeat the ego in order to reach Sita.
Jack needs to defeat his ego. He has crossed the line which the others said not to cross, because he needed to be a leader and take control. He needs to realise that he cannot make all the decisions and that the whole group should make them as they are all of one. Karma
The actions people take (Karma) hide the consciousnes. This is shown when Adam takes an apple from the tree even though he was told not to.
To be conscious again the consciousness and nature have to be combined. They have to get rid of their ego and this is the meaning of life.
Today's world
Science and Philosophy used to mean the same thing, but now every professions has be specialised so that a single person in a branch or medicine or science cannot see the world as a whole anymore.
Jack is a neurone surgeon and so is specialising. He doesn't know the whole of the medical science. But he believes he can help everyone, he can't because he doesn't know how, he does not know the world as a whole. Everybody has lost the harmony. A specialist is so proud of their work that the tiny part he knows he will explain the entire cosmos. These people are now ignorant as they believe that they know alot, but in reality they do not know the whole cosmic law.
Sexual energy has risen from the union of the masculine and feminine, of the conscious and the nature. The children produced are an example of the bond between conscious and nature.
Different Ethnic Groups
The Sanatana Dharma is universal and it has given rise to symbolic expressions, to different traditions in the expressions here and there but it means exactly the same thing. Everyone believes that they are different, but in reality they are exactly the same.
Buddism
Buddist teachings:
Rebirth: consciousness continues after deathg and finds expressions in future life.
Enlightenment: The highest goal in life is to reach enlightenment.
Dharma: The teachings and hence the way to Nivarna. Nivarna is a place free from sufering and individual existence. It is also refered to as enlightenment.
The mind should be at peace through meditation and then a human being can confront reality and overcome hatred and craving.
Buddist believe that you should not harm any living thing. It is a peaceful tradtition. You should abandon the will to fight, even at war or in self defence. “Even if theives carve you limb from limb with a double handed saww, if you make your mind hostile you are not following my teaching.” “Hatred will not cease by hatred, but by love alone. This is the ancient law.”
Sawyer needs to give up the will to fight. He is competing with the group to take control of all the belongings found. He also kills innocent creatures and he cannot live in harmony witht the cosic law. If there is any truth to Buddism and the Dharma it will not disappear from the face of the earth, but will reappear when seekers of truth really discover it.
Should they press the button? they want to know if they should. It seems that no-one in the outside world can find the island. the people on the plane want to discover their dharma to live peacefully in the world. “In killing I would be betraying and abandoning the very teachings I would be seeking to preserve. So it would be better to let him kill me and remain true to the spirit of Dharma.”
“By telling the truth; by not growing angry by giving when asked not matter how little you have by these three things you enter the presence of Devas.”
