If Locke is dead, then think back to the episode in season 3 when Ben shoots Locke and he falls into the pit with the corpses/skeletons in. He see's a skull with a bullet hole through it, then picks up a revolver and goes to kill himself. But Walt shows up and tells him he's still got work to do.
On this premise could Locke infact be Death or the Devil

looking for souls to take with him, hence Hurley saying in the Flash Forward 'Sorry I followed Locke'.
We need Horsey to come in and have a look at this theory and give us some input.
