Wizard of Oz
Henry is Dorothy’s uncle.
Her surname is Gale.
The red shoes worn by the man that Mrs Hawking’s states will die to Desmond.
The red slippers worn by the witch in Wizard of Oz.
The air balloon Henry Gale travelled in like the Wizard of Oz.
Oz a nickname for Australia where they were travelling from on plane.
Damon Lindhof hinted that Henry gale may be the man behind the Iron curtain. Thereby making him possibly the leader of the others. It was then confirmed that Henry was dead and Ben assumed his identity thereby Ben is the head of the Island and the others ie the Emerald City. The co-ordinates to get to the island could be the equivalent of the yellow brick road.
In my last post I was on about the master list. Mikhail tells three characters:
He explains, "You're not on the list because (looks at Kate) you are flawed... (looks at Locke) because you are angry... (turns to Sayid) and weak, and frightened."
So we have:
Sayid as the Lion.
Jack as the tin man
Kate is Dorothy
Locke is the scarecrow.
If Ben is the man behind the curtain then like the wizard he would need to help the characters.
Kate like Dorothy gets home. Will we see this is due to Ben? Kate also removes red shoes from passenger’s feet in the pilot episode that is trapped under wreckage.
Jack like the tin man needs a brain so he can think for himself rather than others. Jack is led by the popular consensus rather than having convictions of his own. He is a poor leader and afraid to look bad in front of the others. He follows the crowd.
Sayid is a coward like the lion. While Sayid may be tough and strong and strike fear into the hearts of people like the lion deep down he is a coward for his actions like the torturing and interrogation of people. He goes on a killing spree for Ben. There is no redemption for his victims like a lion too worried very little of his prey. Sayid needs also to learn to be a man.
Locke is the scarecrow. He like a scarecrow scares people instead of birds. Locke wants his kidney back. The scarecrow wants a heart but Locke in a way wants a heart as he constantly craves love of his Dad who takes that love/heart away. He is searching to belong like the scarecrow.
Hurley I think is Glinda the good with. Glinda has a Glinda bird. We have a hurley bird. Hurley is the one that keeps going on about going back, that sees Charlie, that knows they have done wrong and wants to put it right. While Hurley was seen as a bit of a non entity we have seen him to be courageous and cunning and willing to help others like the good witch.
The Glinda bird tells glinda what goes on and seems to direct the group back to the Emerald city. There is also mention of a special silver box in the Return to Oz, a pandoras box of sorts.
The Dark Tower which the boys are making in relation to Stephen King is full of Wizard references.
• In the book, Oz is surrounded by the "Deadly Desert" which prevents anyone from leaving by land. This is very similar to the bizarre tidal patterns around the Island that prevented Desmond from leaving on his boat.
• In the novel "The Number of the Beast" by Robert Heinlein, Glinda the Good Witch reminds two pregnant women that nobody gives birth in Oz.
• The wizard of Oz was followed up by a book called Journey back to Oz much like Lost where the characters will journey back to the island but how do they find the yellow brick road as we have seen Jack going mad with maps on his floor.
• Vincent could be a version of toto. We have seen Christian Shepherd tell the dog to wake Jack up as he has work to do. Meaning Vincent has some understanding of the island as a dog. Toto helped out many times in the Wizard of Oz against danger.
• The strongest magic in all the world; faith and love. This is the moral of the oz series and is very similar to Lost. We have Rose & bernard. Bernard stating as much to Jin after he learns of Suns affair. Kate & Jack. Sawyer & Kate. Ben & Alex. Juliet & Jack. Despite all the goings on about bewteen characters and the hardship their love and fate has endured. As Ben says to Michael what wouldn’t a father do for his son? He implies that michaels love for Walt is more powerful than the forces he will face. It will get him through despite the fear.
• The Wizard persuades the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion that what they lack are not brains or a heart or courage, but faith in themselves. Again in Lost the concept character wise of belief in themselves and developing. Hurley being a prime example.
• Alice was the protagonist for Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and the writings of Lewis Carroll are an influence.
• Few bits to chew over
