Its not the book itself - its the theories set down by De Selby who the writter uses to tell the story.
Just finished the book last week. very strange read. no wonder noone wanted to publish it when it was written in the 40's. it was published after the death of the author in the 60's

I think the book itself, although I'm not entirely sure, has the narrator dying in the first chapter but doesn't realise it till the end of the book or something like that. Backs up the purgatory theory.
apparently in the hatch. he does die in chapter one but doesnt know till the end.
its has ideas in the book that you can travel from a - b without leaving point A. also seeing more in mirrors rather than yourself
