I posted a few days ago about my maternal great grandfather who died on HMT Resonso and got some very helpful replies. I have just been talking to my father, and discovered another 2 relatives who fought in the First World War. My paternal grandfather (I was very close to him and he never ever talked about the war, either to my father or to me) served with the Kings Liverpools and survived. My father's maternal uncle Harry Briscoe also served with them and suffered from shell shock. Apparently he was admitted to a mental hospital where he stayed until he died in the 1960s. Any idea where I can find out more about this regiment?
Honestly Poppy, the best thing you could do is to join the "Great War Forum", and ask your questions there. Google for the ref. If I include it here, my messsage may never appear.
I was extremely sorry to hear about your uncle, one of many thousands who contined to suffer long after the War's end, their story is untold and they have no memorial.
Thanks, both. Great War forum sounds a good idea - I will check it out. I think the Ian Hyslop programme has made my relations want to talk about things - I am 52 and have never heard about my great uncle before yesterday, even though we used to visit family in Liverpool all the time when I was growing up. Ditto my paternal grandfather - he never said a word.
The Kings (liverpool) Regiment museum is now housed at the Albert Dock in Liverpool. Excellent and the curator and staff are very helpful. Depending on the Battalion there is an excellent book entitled the Liverpool Pals by Graham Maddocks.
You will get all the Briscoe's that served in the Kings Livepool Reg.
By then doing a cross reference with the War Grave site you can narrow it down to 2 possibles one has only H as an Initial and the other has two letters for initials, one is bound to be the one you are looking for. You can ask for more info from the museum online on he search page results.
