I totally agree with everyone!!! (most unusual for me, especially being a female Smile The programme must have bombed. Not surprising really as it's a bit too "high brow" for the usual Channel 4 audience! I mean to say what on earth would people want with birds eye views of the most wonderful and interesting historical sites in the world when they can have Big Brother????? No comment. Sadly, I also agree that the people involved are mostly intolerable! I want to slap just about every one of them Eek The best bit of all for me was at the end when that fool got dumped by his "partner in crime" Ninja Serves him right he should know when there's money involved, no one is your friend. Greedy self obsessed fools.... However....the history is amazing ..worth putting up with the lot of them!!! Valentine ALMOST xxxxx

To say I'm unhappy at missing Egypt is an understatement. The only one I really wanted to watch. Yes the contestants are idiots but I don't know about you guys out there but I WOULD 'do' the blonde mathematician!! Who lost at the end of the 4th anyway?

Like a lot of other people it seems, I also missed episode 4 due to Channel 4 messing with the air times!

Sadly BBC did the same with the revival of Treasure Hunt and that's what killed that series! Frown

What's even more infuriating is that the cheeky folks at C4 expect you to pay a quid to see episode 4! (on 4OD)Mad It doesn't look like it will be repeated either. Why they can't repeat it on More4 I don't know.

ARRRGGGHHHH!!! I can't believe I have missed the Egypt episode Mad

I had a feeling Channel 4 were going do this and I did search the schedules on Saturday night but I still did not find it.
The Search is easily one of the best programmes on TV at the moment and one of the few I would go out of my way to watch so I really do hope that it is repeated before Saturday.

It must have really tanked in the ratings for them to do this but I am disappointed in Channel 4 for not sticking to their guns and and keeping it in the same timeslot; after all isn't their remit to show 'minority' interest programming?

And yes Saskia is hot!! Wink

The teams were put back to boys and girls. The boys lost and Kris the lawyer was booted off, despite thinking he had done a deal with Simon to dump Adrian. Alex knows now that Saskia and the other girl will dump her - good!

If you read Saski's profile, you will find she is "modest" too.

Those of us that did manage to discover the whenabouts of the Egyptian episode of this otherwise excellent program will have been disappointed by a couple of dreadful faux pas.

Firstly the most basic research would have revealed the theory of Ramesses II being responsible for the Exodus as long discredited, if it ever had any credibility. There is no evidence in Egyptian or contemporary Hittite documents that it took place at all, and a time analysis of the Old Testament places it more than 150 years before that most illustrious of Egyptian monarchs came to the throne.

Secondly, to state that the Moses cave at the summit of Sinai was, as a matter of recorded fact, the very place where the deity descended to present the tablet, was insulting to the intelligence of, I would imagine, a fairly bright audience.

However, I hope C4 repeats that episode for the sake of those who failed in that particular Search. And Saskia? Well if it weren't that I were a happily married man, this message would contain a proposal. (Except I suspect I would be joining a rather long queue.)

thanks for updating me on the egyptian episode, like others , I had scoured the papers for the time of episode 4, found in last weeks' Radio Times, that it was to be screened on Sunday 4th Feb, and was gutted to have missed it. Why no repeats?Looking forward to the next episode, is it true that Kris got the boot? If so, very good!!!!

I thought I would add my disapointment at the moving around of the Search. I just assumed that after CBB it would be back in its regular slot. Presumably it will have done really badly in the Saturday ratings as most of the people who liked it missed it it seems. This surely can't have been cheap t.v. to make with all the different locations so why aren't C4 making more of it? Very annoyed Mad not that C4 will take any notice Frown

I am also one of the many people who missed the Egypt episode and it really annoyed me. That was the one that I was looking forward to seeing as the Ancient Egyptians have been a obssession to me for many years. I suppose I will have to rent it off 40D Frown. I wont be able to keep it though, you only get it for 2 days. I like to tape the search and watch it again Frown. Ahh well what can I do, I'm going to Egypt myself later this year Big Grin

Bob, There is a Jewish Israeli archaeologist, who pops up as The Naked Archaeologist on UK History every so often. He has shown that Mt Sinai is actually not far west of Eilat and it fiots the biblical description, whereas the other one does not by a long chalk. he also did a Discovery prog on the Plagues, which was well reasoned and like everyone else, binned the Ramesses II idea. I forget which Pharoah he went for, but it wa sone about 150 years earlier. David Rohl's work pointed to Dudimose about 200 years earlier and he is certainly right that the traditional chronology, dating Ram2 at 1250 for Kadesh is way out and he should be at about 975BC. Once you move the dates correctly, many other documents do support the Exodus and other events.

As for The Search, sorry, I dopn't see the fascination with Saskia - very clever certainly, but that is all. She reminds me of a thin blonde rabbit.

I was supposed to have gotten a refund on two downloads of episode 3 because It didn't download properly, they sent me the e-mail saying their going to issue the payments but I have yet to receive them, but they were happy to take my money for downloading a different programme (luckily that downloaded)
but it looks like on Friday I'm gonna have to download episode 4 now because of the stupid schedulers.
Who do we talk to about this atrocity?

Plus does anyone know what the music is for the Poisoned Chalice is called?

stick wand in the air and announces "accio book"!
a great rumble as though of a stampeed was approaching, bang, slap, bof, "arrrrrrrggggghhhh, that hurts" after 30 minutes of this, and coming from under a huge pile of books, "ooh, ahh, my joints hurt, note to self next time dont do that in a library"

DaveH, I don't think it is a fascination with Saskia just the fact that she is good looking, has a great body, legs up to her neck and of course most importantly Wink very, very clever.

I sent off an Email to channel4 complaining and got an automated reply saying they could take up to 3 weeks to reply. By that time we'll know the winner. Very shoddy work by Ch4, maybe if one or two of the contestants made racist comments they would put it on prime time!! Did you note the sarcasm there!? Confused Anyway, looking forward to Saturday 5:35PM.

Sorry Dave, David Rohl does not have many allies within the Egyptology community – the general view seems to be that he is guilty of focussing on the shreds that support his theories, whilst ignoring the wealth of evidence that contradicts them. To suggest that the conventional dynastic timescale is some 300 years too early is to fly in the face of not only Egyptian documentary and monumental evidence, but Hittite, Assyrian, Persian and early Hellenic and sources as well.

For a thoroughgoing analysis of the problems of dating events in ancient Egypt, and why the conventional timescale must be more or less right, one could do worst than consult Sir Alan Gardner’s Egypt of the Pharaohs – nearly 50 years old, but still oft quoted by modern-day experts.

No contemporary Hebrew writings exist, and the best guess for the source documents for the Old Testament (apart from perhaps the Torah) is 500-100 BC - or more that 1000 years after the Exodus was deemed to have occurred. There are a number of attractive theories, all supported by the flimsiest of evidence. One is that the Israelites were part of the Semitic Hyksos force that conquered and occupied Egypt (although likely only the northern parts) during the second intermediate period. They were driven out by Ahmose, founder of the 18th Dynasty and the New Kingdom, and grandfather of Tuthmoses I (Dave’s Dudimose?). This, was the conclusion of a UK History program, Exodus Decoded, which I think is the one to which Dave refers: it was narrated by James Cameron, better known for directing such historically accurate masterpieces as Titanic. (Sorry, that was bitchy.)

Another, more controversial theory, is that Judaism originated from the remnants of the monotheistic religion of Akhenaten, whose adherents were oppressed and driven from the land – the Exodus? - by the restored priesthood of Amun during the reigns of Smenkhare and Tutankhamun.

A lot of theories, and you pays your money and takes your choice, but one thing is certain – anyone who claims any event, date or place, appertaining to that epoch, as definitive is talking nonsense. That was the sin committed at least twice in the fourth episode of the Search.

Re Saskia – well, I suppose that it one less in the queue.

Hi all, 'the search' for me, is finding the programme in the listings but the answer to the poisened chalice music is Handel's Sarabande, from "Suite No.4 in D Minor" (HWV 447).
What's up with the competition grid (part 1)it has been changed and is now nonsensical?
Hope to watch this weekend - really fed up about missing Egypt, hope it will be repeated.

Bob, The guy I was talking about is Simcha Jacobivici
http://uktv.co.uk/index.cfm/uktv/History.item/aid/539121

His Discovery prog shown a few weeks ago here was really about explaining the 12 Plagues and then following the trail out to the Reed Sea. It wasn't the Exodus Decoded, which I have also seen. He gave a very plausible line of reasoning as to what the plagues were and why they came in that particular order, before ascribing the Pharaoh I think to be Amenhat III.

Maybe it is because Rohl and I are both grads of University College London, (as are Ricky gervais and Jonathan Ross, but you can't have everything!) - however, Rohl is certianly hte first in the popualr sphere to challenge the Conventional Wisdom on dating and he shows right at the start that there are serious problems with the received wisdom. Nobody takes the Ram2 idea for the Exodus as correct these days, but that link is key to the conventional chronology. Likewise, the biblical list of the campaign in Israel of "Shisak" is almost identical with Ram2, but almost completely at odds with the conventional Shoshenk I.

You will always find a lot of vociferous opposition from the followers of the Conventional Wisdom - I have seen exactly the same tactics deployed against myself and others, who have challenged the CW in a more recent period - and then come the deranged "reviews" on Amazon! I have also seen your argument, which is best summed up as Ruling Theory - not just CW, but twisting the situation to fit the CW. The argument that is advances is that unles sthe "New approach" can prove absolutely everything down to the last detail, it must be wrong and therefore the CW must be right, despite the fact that the same test is not applied to the CW. Rohl himself in his books says that he is quite happy to shift the timelines, but in print, you have to go with something in the end to avoid coming across as vague - he suggests Dudimose, but is not fixed on it. What he has done is to break the CW belief in a pretty flakey chronology, which does not work at all.

Okay, I will leave you guys to Saskia! Big Grin
