you say schools are fascinated by WW2? we did everything possible to avoid it in our school..
GCSE:
American Civil Rights
Peace Treaties After WW1
The Rise of the Nazis (but finished as soon as war was declared by britain)
And then Britain (Suffragettes/gists, 1906 Reforms)
A Level:
Russian REvolution 1900-1917
Luther and the German Reformation
HenryVIII and the English Reformation
Cold War
Individual Assignment on anything we like
The TUdor State
If anything, my school is avoiding what I perceive to be one of the most interesting, and important periods of modern history. If we are not taught about what actually happened in the wars, how will we truely be able to value the people who died. When all the veterans have died, there will be no one to pass on the facts of the war, because the young people, who are enthusiasitc and interested in History don't have a clue.
Another interesting fact for you all.. as a grammer school girl, you'd expect me to have a wide knowledge in history? Napolean, Nelson, French civil war, Vikings, Saxons, Romans, American Civil war, events in the world wars, Pearl Harbour, Celts, Ancient Greeks.. Anything i know about those, I've learnt for myself, from individual reading outside the classroom. Havent been taught ANYTHING about some of the most popular times in history..
