This letter is an important bit of Scottish History and should be on Show in Scotland not kept in some drawer at Kew
I would be obliged if you could vote to enable us to bring this letter back to Scotland where it belongs

No, it was written by a French King so is really a part of French history. I shall be campaigning for it to be returned to Paris and put on display in the Louvre immediately.

Yes you are right this is what the letter says

Philip by the grace of God, King of the French, to my beloved and trusting agents appointed to the court of Rome, greetings and Love. We command you to request the Supreme Pontiff to hold our beloved William Wallace of Scotland, Knight recommended to his favour in those matters of business that he has to dispatch with him

Th eletter was for William wallace and was taken from him when he was captured in Robroystoon so to us Scots it is about the only think we have of Sir William wallace so to say because it was written by the French King then its French is behond me but if you wish to start up your own petition feel free

Also another wee bit about the letter
The letter, is known as The Safe Conduct, it was being carried by Wallace when he was seized in August 1305 in Robroyston near Glasgow. The letter was written by the King of France, it was meant to grant Wallace safe conduct to visit the Pope. The letter has been archived in London since Wallace was tried and executed.

As Wallace's property shouldn't go to a reletive of Wallace, I don't think he had any children but I know he had at least one brother.

As far as we know there are no living relatives to Wallace and even if there was I am sure they would not have a problem with having the npeople of Scotland to look at their hero's letter rather than it being on some drawer in Kew Mad

Warney600, Good luck with your crusade. You won't be surprised to learn that I am not one of Wallace's greatest fans, but I do agree that the letter would be far better on display in Scotland than stuck somewhere in London where no-one will see it, or at best it will be seen by people like me who are not Wallace sympathisers. Far better that it is on his native country where it can be viewed more sympathetically.

I quite understand why you and many others are drawn to Wallace - I suspect if I were a Scot I would feel the same! As I'm not, you will, I am sure, appreciate why I am not a fan of his (and I know what you think of Longshanks! We'll disagree amicably on that one!) Again, good luck with the petition; I've signed up.

Warney600, Boy. There's a lot of Scots out there with huge chips on their shoulders aren't there (see some of the comments on the petition). Almost made me wish I'd not signed. True there are some puerile comments from English contributors. Why can't our two nations have a mature, grown up 21st century relationship?

Bretwalda
Thanks very much and thanks for signing the petition
The walk for wallace was a brilliant day and would like to say the English Police where brilliant considering most of us where armed with Broadswords, Dirks(scottish Knife), Claymores and pistols
The church service was out of this world and not a dry eye in the house
I can see why you are not a fan of Wallace but to me and fellow Scots to achieve what he achieved in those days was unheard off
To stand on the day which he did in Westminster Hall which has changed very little and then doing the same 6 mile walk to where he was murdered will live with me for ever
It was an honour to be there and only hope he was looking down to know even after 700 yrs he is not forgotton and never will be

PS Andrew De Moray is not forgotton either
Also David.R.Ross who did the walk has loads of books out and are worth a read as they are not heavy but get the point across and you can feel the Passion I know he has come out in the books

The best way to look at it is that we have idiots on both sides
I know a lot of people who have signed the petition and have the same Passion for Scotalnd and her history without having to be anti English
You have signed a worth while cause and can only say there are more good guys than idiots who have signed the petition

Warney,

Sounds great fun. Glad you had such a good time. Sounds like it was maybe a bit of a pilgrimage for you? I'm sure WW was looking down on it all. Wonder how he gets on with Ed I in the afterlife!? Wink

Warney600, Here, here. Well said. Without passion for one's past, and respect for other people's history, traditions and values, we show our ignorance. By that definition you are certainly one of the good guys it seems.

Its quite a thought Big Grin
If you get the DVD which you can get on the site ,shows the day very nicely to be honest
Funny thing on the day was getting in to Westmister hall and some American lassie was getting pulled up for having a camera but she was just looking at us getting in with guns and swords and security just smiling at us
Also on the walk a TV crew asking some English guy to ask us what we where there for and he just said, Are you off your fxxxxx head they are armed to the teeth
Over all on the walk people where asking us whay we where there and it was the way it should be between our two Nations, Although us as Free will help Wink

Yes I would imagine it would be much better to have them displayed in Scotland - maybe in Edinburgh though not in the parliment building Smile - for all to see rather than hidden away at Kew.

Good point, you only have to drive into England on the A68 to see the immature mentality of some Scots. On the Stone on the peak, on the 'Welcome to England' side, there is some immature graffiti about English Poofters!

The 'Welcome to Scotland' side is free of Graffiti.

I thoroughly enjoy going to Scotland, and go at least once a year, but it is sad they blame the 'English' for ancient problems, as at that time, England was ruled by a Plantagenet King.
