I've always thought it to be the Duke of Monmouth.
I beleive james II couldn't bear to execute his own nephew after the sedgemoor rebellion and had him shipped off to Loius XIVth.

Latest book I read reckoned it was D'Artagnan (published last year I think)-yes he was a real bloke!
