I only know this battle from war and peace, it was well described in my opinion.

Could it have turned out differently? Say if the Czar had listened to Kutuzov and ordered a strategic "scientific" retreat? Kutuzov wanted to exacerbate Napoleon's already weakened supply lines by further retreat. He applied this strategy in 1812 against Napoleon to decisive effect.
