Until I saw the title of this docudrama, I was unaware that London had blown itself up in 1974.
Whose sloppy titling was this?
Why not The Year They Blew London Up? It would have made more sense and still retained the shock element, not to mention piquing viewer interest enough to want to find out WHO blew London up! Which turned out not to really be London, but Guildford and surrounds, but that's another story.
Aside from that, it was not a bad programme, but I was almost put off watching it altogether by the daft title, assuming that the content was bound to be as ill conceieved as the title.
I beilieve that you are talking about the channel 4 program, if so I think the title was ment to be a referecne to the recent attacks and the program, (although I did not see it)was trying to bring back some form of either fighting spirit or along the lines of bringing hope and promise to those who live in and around london, by refering to the IRA attacks of that year.
You come across with aragonse and maybe a little nievity, for no one believe London blew up and that the title was to be a catching one to draw attention to it, just like the half cocked noncical headlines in papers to get our attension.
No, London hadn't blown itself up in 1974...as I was still living there, up until 1976. What 1974 had were IRA bomb scares and some bombs found, defused, and warnings all over the place.....to be on the alert and don't leave your baggage on the ground, on seats etc....wasn't a great time to be in London. Many people didn't heed warnings as they left their carrier bags, cases on the ground, or walked away from them...leaving one wondering when it was going to blow up.....that was London then, and continued for some years too.
Didn't see the program you mentioned, but maybe the idea was to draw parallels with 1974, which recent events were, with another set of terrorists at work.
There is always some form of terror amongst us....once started it never really goes away. It's just that it's not very noticeable at times....
