was having a conversation the other day and thought it needed the attention of a music forum so here it is..

what is more important the lyrics or the melody.
i say lyrics.
i'm a folk singer songwriter with a wholesome passion for lyrical content. for me, words are the key, melody is important but the creativity and originality lies in the poetry of the lyrics. melody is the messenger but the words are the message.
but.. devils advocate says.
the words are immaterial, the voice is just one of many instruments used in the composition of a song, the words are only there to make 'la la la' more interesting.

so i say...
la la la,'s are ambiguous and have no meaning, but as soon as you write a word you open a box of audience interpretation, and so it is only polite to give an audience something exciting, and worth listening to. but if the voice is just being used as an instrument then the interpretation should be in the melody and the singer should stick to 'la la la's as they are far less interpretable.

we both pondered into the night

what is everyone elses oppinion on the matter?

cheers

andrew.

ok it's my turn to plug myself (for want of a better phrase)andrew j smart i hope you like it.
