I'm the Head at a small rural primary school in Northamptonshire. The children all bring sandwiches for lunch as in most of the county. Last October, we decided we'd cook a Christmas dinner for the 61 children and all the teachers and support staff. One of our parents rears turkeys, so we ordered a couple and all the vegetables were locally sourced. The day before the lunch, the infant children made the puddings (jelly!) and the junior children peeled carrots, potatoes, sprouts, prepared romanesco caulis, did the pigs in blankets and stuffing balls. They had a wonderful time and especially enjoyed being allowed to eat raw carrots! On the day of the meal, I spent the whole morning in the kitchen cooking and we all ate together at 12.30. It was delicious and the children thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. Thanks to Jamie Oliver for sowing the seeds of an idea with his programme about getting the local pub to do some cooking - that wasn't practical for us but I did 'farm out' the jobs of cooking the turkeys and the roast potatoes!
