Eggs have, and always will be a food staple. However it does not mean that production standards should be so low that animals suffer as a consequence - even if they ARE to be harvested at the end of their 'productive' life to move on to the next part of the food production 'machine'.
I am not a vegetarian, and probably never will be, although I am not adverse to eating vegetarian food - I like my Sunday roast as much as the next carnivore.
But we should keep it real. WE (the great British public) waste massive amounts of food, because we have been conditioned by food retailers into buying more than we actually need. If this was not the case then there would not need to be so many animals held in our current production facilities for a start. Lets start looking at our actual consumption, then look to see how we can produce food humanely to meet out needs, rather than our whims.

I agree with you and as we are being pushed into buying more and more items that are pre-packed so that as far as food is concerned we end up buying more than we need. I try to use local shops as much as possible but I appreciate that if you live in large urban areas the 'local shop' is or has died and that is not possible

Supermarkets made a big thing of trying to eradicate carrier bags and almost immediately seemed to move everything that was loose into pre packed.

Equally supermarkets have a tendency to sell us what they think we want to buy or worse what they want us to buy and not generally what we wish to buy as the Chicken Out campaign seems to be highlighting.

It has been suggested that on average we throw away 35 % or more of the food we buy.

I am continually complaining to my local Tesco that they only seem to have pre packed veg available. There's only 2 of us in our house, I really don't need 2.5kg of potatoes per week or 10 parsnips or 20 carrots. The waste ends up on my compost heap, which although is not as bad as throwing it in the bin, it's still a waste of money.
