I have just approached my local council to apply for an allotment for growing my own veg. I have been told that the current waiting list is over 100 people in my county in Scotland.

My Garden isn't exactly big enough, and with the execption of one wall, is in constant shade . I am desperate for some land to grow veg for my family... does anyone know if I can put any pressure on my local government to supply a local allotment site??

I can’t help thinking allotments are becoming fashionable with people who really don’t have a clue what they are talking about. Harrods for example has a garden on its roof for people to keep allotments; the only thing is that they provide gardeners who plant everything and look after it and then sell the stuff to the people who like to think they have their own allotment up on the roof… so really they may as well just buy it off the shelf like everyone else.

And I can’t help thinking allotments are also becoming fashionable with people who really want to know what is going into the food they eat and make sure its not harbouring any nasty chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

you could always write a letter to the local authority, cant see it would do any harm, or do you know an older person with a large garden who can no longer manage looking after it, who may be willing to let you use it to grow some veg as long as you let them have some, or something along those lines.

In reply to iamGeo, I'd research locally - don't take the council's word for it! Find out from the council's website where your local ones are then go and do a reccy. You might find loads of vacant ones despite the "waiting list". If the council then still maintains there are non available I'd bag myself one.

Our council has been following a policy of not letting lotties as they can then flog off the land when they all become vacant. That's what's happened to us which is why I advocate direct action

2008 will be my 5th year of waiting for an allotment, last year i was told i was next on the list, then the lady who deals with the allotments left bicester town council they then re-done the list im now back down to 7th. its a joke

I am sure that local authorities are obliged to provide allotments for people who ask for them.
you need to check this out, maybee at the local library, because there may be a stipulation that a set number of people have to apply. Anyway do not give up and do not be fobbed off.
