The Other Side - Episode 12 (paperwork)Ethan and Tom looked up at the door and Dr. Laws walked in. He smiled at them both but then looked at Tom with a serious expression. Tom knew he was in trouble.
DR. LAWS: “I just saw Twiggy in the corridor Tom, his eye was looking a bit blackened, wouldn’t be anything to do with you would it?”
Tom smirked that his punch had left a visible reminder.
TOM: “He had it coming”
Dr. Laws gave him an unimpressed stare, although Ethan was sure he saw the Dr give a small smile. Ethan felt he should say what really happened, or at least part of it, as Tom didn’t look like he was going to.
ETHAN: “Twiggy hurt Tom too, he twisted his arm, he’s just as bad.”
Tom smiled even wider at Ethan’s defence, childish though it was, it showed real loyalty. Even Dr. Laws smiled properly.
DR. LAWS: “You know Ethan, you would have been what we called a snitch back when I was your age. I had figured that Twiggy would have started it, and finished it.”
TOM: “Hey, you don’t think I could take him?”
DR. LAWS: “Of course you couldn’t, his job requires more physical strength than yours, he’s had more of a chance to tone up his muscles. It’s an undeniable fact if life, get used to it. And don’t you go trying to prove me wrong and picking more fights with him, because it’s just not worth it.”
This hadn’t been the answer that Tom had wanted, he folded his arms stroppily and gave the doctor evils. Dr. Laws didn’t care; he knew Tom wouldn’t like the truth. He looked down at his clipboard then turned his attention to Ethan.
DR. LAWS: “As I originally came here to say, I have your results Ethan” Tom immediately dropped his mood and stood up, leaning over his shoulder and reading the results for himself.
TOM: “ Blood content…. positive, activity in blood… negative… just what you predicted Doc, that mean we’re all clear?”
DR. LAWS: “As long as he keeps taking the injection he should be fine”
TOM: “What time was it administered today?”
DR. LAWS: “ 9:07 am”
TOM: “Make it easier to remember, shall we just say 0900 hours, and that’ll be on… um, let see, today’s the 15th”
DR. LAWS: “It’ll be on the 24th and yeah, good idea, probably safer too. How does that all tie in with yours, he may be happier if you were taking it with him”
TOM: “Yeah, that’s perfect, I’m having mine at 10 today, so my next one will be 24th too”
DR. LAWS: “Tom, it’s 10:25”
Tom looked up at the clock and saw he was right, and rushed out of the room cursing. Dr. Laws rolled his eyes at him while Ethan giggled. Dr. Laws then went over to the draws and pulled out the same needle he had used on Ethan earlier and a couple of bottles of pale yellow liquid. He took them back to Ethan.
DR. LAWS: “Ethan, this is yours, for the injections ok. Others will probably give it too you for a while, until you’re ready to do it yourself, but you will need to use this needle. That means you’re gonna have to keep it on you at all times too, and a few bottles of this, the actual preventative” He pressed a button and injected the bottle in there, and showed Ethan how to load it up properly, and where it would need to be injected.
Tom arrived back, leaning on the doorframe and watching Ethan practising loading the medicine and lining it up. It remedied him of back when he was that age, and had just been banished to he medical station. Although by then he well knew how to do the injections he still liked to just flick around with it, seeing how quickly he could load it in moments of boredom. He now had his own in his bag, he had forgotten it on their last trek.
DR. LAWS: “Remember, every 9 days ok, I’m sure Tom will remind you” he looked behind him at Tom in the doorway, nodding at him, and Tom nodded back, before talking to Ethan.
TOM: “Alright littleman, you ready to go then”
ETHAN: “Go where?”
TOM: “ I gotta take you back to base camp for a briefing, and to organise what you’re gonna do. I shoulda took you before, but under the circumstances I haven’t had a chance.”
ETHAN: “ok” he hopped off his bed and ran over to the door and Tom, who handed him a small backpack.
TOM: “you’re gonna need one of these. I’ve put some water in there for you, and you can put your injection stuff in there too” As he said it Ethan had been checking out the bags contents. Dr. Laws handed him the medicine that he had left on the bed and he put that in the bag too. Once he had everything packed he smiled up Tom ready to leave.
DR. LAWS: “Goodbye boys, be careful,” he said as the disappeared down the corridor and out the doors at the end. “Goodness knows what’ll happen if you bump into Twiggy out there.”
20 minutes into the walk and Ethan already needed to stop for a drink. It was a boiling hot day, much hotter than he had been used to in Canada. As he was taking the water bottle out of his bag something jogged his memory. After taking a large drink of water he looked up at Tom, who was leaning against a tree drinking from his bottle.
ETHAN: “Why was there a piece of paper with my name and stuff on it in your bag?”
Tom stopped drinking and slowly lowered the bottle from his lips, staring at Ethan.
TOM: “How do you know that?”
ETHAN: “I found it. In your bag, when we were going to bury Dad, and you let me take the water bottles out.”
Tom stood up strait suddenly, towering over Ethan, who jumped back up to his feet, throwing his bag back on, ready to make a dash.
TOM: “ Oh, and you just decided to have a snoop around while you had the chance” he stared hard at Ethan, who tried not to blink, or look frightened. After a minute that seemed like an eternity Tom blinked freely again, and his expression softened, even smiling. “ It’s ok, I woulda done the same thing, in fact, I’m impressed, sneakiness is what makes a great hunter”
Ethan grinned a bit at this, feeling proud, but then realised that Tom hadn’t answered his question.
ETHAN: “So why do you have it, what’s it for?”
TOM: “Not easily distracted either-”
ETHAN: “Toooooom!”
TOM: “Ok, ok, I’ll do my best to explain… Whenever we have to go collect someone, like you, we have to write a list of them, details and stuff, before we go to collect them, or else we can only keep them for a week, then just have to let them go into the jungle and that wouldn’t not be good.
ETHAN: “Why do you have to do that?”
TOM: “I dunno, it’s just the rules”
ETHAN: “And what are you gonna do with the list”
TOM: “ I dunno…they’ll deal with it all when I get you back, I’m sure”
ETHAN: “Oh, ok”
They continued walking, Tom quickened the pace to make up for time lost chatting. Ethan decided it was best to ask his next question as they walked.
ETHAN: “Why’d you have that big knife in there too?”
TOM: “Wow, you really did have a good look around in there, didn’t cha?” he looked back at Ethan for a second. Ethan didn’t seem worried that his friend has a weapon, just curious. There was the crack of a twig and Tom looked back up. His eyes scanned the nearby trees but he didn’t see anything, and presumed it was just a bird or something.
TOM: “Its just in case we meet anything nasty, there are some animals on this island you wouldn’t want to meet unprepared. That and we may need it to catch dinner”
ETHAN: “Like what?”
TOM: “for dinner?” he grinned
ETHAN: “No silly, what wouldn’t we want to meet?”
TOM: “Well the bears for a start”
Ethan’s eyes widen and he looks around, whispering, “Bears?” Tom sees some mangos under a tree and goes to pick some up for him and Ethan’s lunch. He puts his pack down and starts looking for his knife. Meanwhile Ethan spots something half hidden in the grass. He goes over to have a look.
ETHAN: “Tom? What’s this?”
Tom looks up just in time to see Ethan bending down to pick up a box in the undergrowth. As Ethan put his hands on it Tom realised what was going on. He ran towards him, yelling and waving his arms.
TOM: “Ethan, No! STOP!”
But Ethan didn’t stop, he picked up the box then looked over to see what Tom was yelling about. But what Tom thought was going to happen didn’t. Instead of under Ethan a net shot up beside him, catching up Tom as he ran towards him, and pulling him struggling a meter from the ground, still in standing position, as Ethan stood on the ground beneath him, looking up aghast. Both looking utterly helpless.
