The Other Side – Episode 2
Ethan’s eyes snap open. Light streams in the entrance of the caves, warming him where he lay. He couldn’t tell what the time was, or how long he’d been sleeping as his watch had stopped the previous night. Not only his watch, his flashlight’s batteries had also run out during the night. He flicked the switch on and off a few times, hoping to find a glimmer of life, but there was nothing. He threw it against the cave wall, not that he expected that to help. He’d just have to find his father, he’d know what to do.
He walked to the mouth of the caves, but then stalled, afraid still of the whispering from the night before. He couldn’t go out in it, he was too frightened. His fathers voice sounded in his head. “Don’t be scared”
*Flashback*
Ethan grips the arms of his seat tightly as the whole plane shakes.
ETHAN: “What’s happening? Are we gonna crash?”
FATHER: “No, son, it’s just the turbulence, it’ll all be over soon, don’t worry”
He takes his son’s hand and after a few second the plane levels out, and the shaking stops. The pilot switches off the fasten seatbelts sign and everyone unbuckles their seatbelts, and relaxes. Everyone except Ethan, who keeps his on, just in case, and keeps gripping the seats arm and his fathers hand tightly.
FATHER: “Ethan, how many times have you seen me leaving on this flight?”
ETHAN: “8 times… you go every year.”
FATHER: “And I always came back, it has never crashed yet, and there has always been turbulence, in fact it’d worry me if there wasn’t, I wouldn’t believe we were flying” Ethan smiles a bit “It’s perfectly normal, so you can relax, and take you’re seatbelt off. Nothing bad is gonna happen”
Ethan unbuckled his seatbelt, but embarrassed he didn’t replace his hand in his father’s.
ETHAN: “You must think I’m a real wimp”
But his father shook his head
FATHER: “It’s too early for that”
Ethan gave him a quizzical look
FATHER: “It’s your first time flying Ethan, it’s understandable for you to be a bit nervous, but it’s whether you’re willing to face that fear again that shows who’s brave and who’s a whim”
Ethan smiled. Next time the turbulence started he would be ready for it. He was no whim.
*End of Flashback*
Ethan stands at the mouth of the cave. He steels himself up and steps out. It’s very warm out here, but a light breeze whistling through the trees keeps him at a comfortable temperature. He listens out for the voices, but that can be heard is the wind, the singing of birds, and, not far away, the sea brushing against the shore. That would be a good place to start looking for his father, as he would probably have washed up, like Ethan.
Out on the beach Ethan looks up and down the shoreline. Pieces from his boat are littered down the beach as far as he can see. The wrecked boat itself he could just see, a little way down. Ethan heads towards it, picking up pieces of junk as he went.
As he reaches it he notices footprints in the sand, large ones, leading behind it.
ETHAN: “Dad!?”
Ethan races forwards and round the boat to where the footprints lead.
Someone is standing there, but it’s not his father.
In Episode 3: Who is this person, and what do they want with Ethan?
