Unfortunately in the VERY one sided and extremely unprofessional episode of Messiah last night the programme leaves the average 'open minded' viewer with more questions than answers. The programme makes annoying assertions without ever explaining itself. I felt cheated and frutrated at the end. In acting as a 'false' medium, Derren Brown came out with certain information toward individuals in the audience that he could not have possibly known. Of course they believed him; most people would have! What he didn't explain was how he new this imformation? His assertion that by asking the right questions etc etc...unfortunately his comments to the individuals in the audience were far too specific to be guess work of any kind. He must have had prior knowledge. This (the whole meaning of the programme)was not explained in anyway and as previously mentioned, spoilt what should have been an excellent piece of journalism.
Brown should try and stop being his own number one fan and give the audience what they really want...answers...not his self opinionated short cuts!
Firstly hello all, this is my first post here. I saw some Derren Brown specials around a month ago (the first screening of his work in Australia) and although I am a life long sceptic and have a basic understanding of the “tricks” used, it blew my mind. In particular his ‘cold reading’ of participants was extremely good.
For those who are unfamiliar with ‘cold reading’, it is a process that is used by mentalists and psychics to elicit from people you have no knowledge of. It uses a combination of techniques that includes:
General/vague questioning.
Reading body language/facial cues.
Memorizing lists of common names/aliments/common household oddities (eg: old calendars).
Educated guessing (eg: an elderly person has probably lost a child, a younger person has lost a parent/grandparent).
Of course the most important element is a willing believer and you can guarantee that most of the audience of a John Edward show is there because they believe.
There is a very good website that has a lot of information about cold reading (including the book that taught Derren the process that is available to purchase) here:
